What is Meditation?

You can read all kinds of very technical and traditional definitions of what meditation is online, and there are numerous articles and scientific studies about how meditation affects our mind, and improves stress, anxiety and blood pressure, etc.

This is not going to be that.

Instead, these are my personal thoughts on meditation: what it is, why I think it’s so important, and how it has changed my life.

I have anxiety, and I now know that I always have. Turns out that what I thought for years was just a tendency to worry actually has a name: anxiety. My meditation practice has been the number one thing making a difference with my anxiety. Meditation has given me the tools and skills to see my anxiety for what it is (and what it is not).

My meditation practice has also made me a more patient person. Learning to witness my thoughts and realize that I am not my thoughts, I simply have thoughts (and lots of them), has helped me to be better able to respond, instead of react, in stressful situations. I’m less likely to explode when feeling stressed or triggered.

Meditation has helped me be more empathetic and kind. I’m a helper and giver for a living, and before practicing meditation, I had a tendency to give too much, burn out, and not have any reserves, leaving me with nothing left to give. Finding a way to regularly fill my cup with my meditation practice means that I have reserves I can share with others.

Grounded, anchored, and calm. Meditation has helped me find an inner resource within myself I previously didn’t know was there. The simple practice of sitting on a cushion, focusing on one thing, and gently bringing my mind back when it wanders away (which it does often) has created a resilience in me that’s hard to put into words. It is something that must be felt.

I have had trouble falling asleep at night since childhood. Whether it’s thinking and planning or anxiety, my mind likes to kick it up into high gear right as I am trying to settle down for the night. Practicing meditation in the evening, before bed, helps to settle my mind so that I can fall asleep.

You Know That Calm, Peaceful, Centered Feeling You Get After Yoga Class?

Imagine Feeling That Way, Even When You Haven’t Just Come From Yoga.

What if you could learn a simple practice that could help you:

  • de-stress and recharge your batteries
  • help you deal with your worry and anxiety?
  • What if you had the ability to respond instead of reacting to life’s challenges?
  • What if you could be more patient, present loving and kind?

But right now…

You’re often stressed out, anxious or worried. Life is so busy you feel like it’s slipping between your fingers. You feel like you are caught on a treadmill just running to catch your breath. You don’t feel like you have any time for yourself, let alone presence or patience for those you love. You know you aren’t living your best life or the best version of yourself.

You may have caught glimpses of the peace you crave in your Yoga class, but it’s always fleeting. Maybe you have tried some guided Meditations in the past. Maybe you’ve tried to learn to Meditate on your own, but you didn’t know what you were doing. You couldn’t stay focused and got distracted easily. It was a lot harder than you thought, so you gave up and thought maybe Meditation wasn’t for you after all.

I so get it!

I spent years looking for something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I was a chronic worrier, I felt stressed and anxious a lot of the time. Life seemed to be rushing by me and I couldn’t catch my breath. As a type A personality, I was pretty high strung and reactive. Yoga helped but, not long after class the “Yoga Buzz “ wore off and I was back to feeling overwhelmed.

I started to look into Meditation classes (after all Meditation is the second half of Yoga). Somehow none of the classes I found were a good fit. They were too intense or didn’t offer much instruction, guidance or support. They just sat me on a cushion and let me sit there clueless about what I was doing. I felt pretty alone and lost.

It took me three years of hunting around to finally piece together a practice I could work with.

That’s why I created Meditation 101- Making Meditation Practical

I put everything I wished I had learned from the beginning in a simple, easy to follow 7-week course.

“A very worthwhile class!
Nyk taught me the real-world practical value of Meditating which hadn’t occurred to me until her class.
I never thought simply sitting for a period of time everyday would have helped me to become a more calm, focused, and compassionate person.
I couldn’t be more grateful of this inspiring experience!”

In Meditation 101 you will learn everything you need to know (the who, what, when, where, why and how) of creating your own Meditation practice.

  • You’ll learn to Meditate in a simple clear way that progresses from week to week.
  • By the end of the 7-week live course, you’ll be able to sit for 20 min.
  • You’ll practice with a group of like-minded beginner mediators to support you on your path.
  • You’ll have access to both a private Facebook and insight timer group where we can support each other and practice together.
  • You’ll receive a PDF guidebook that you can refer back to as often as you need to.
“I had already been looking at Meditation books, videos, and talking to people, so when I read the details of this course, I knew it what I was looking for.
Now that I Meditate, I feel more balanced. I am slower to respond to things; I listen more.
The group itself was very supportive of each other and very honest about their journey.
Also, Nyk sharing her personal journey in Meditation really takes the pressure off. This is practice after all – not perfection.
I would absolutely recommend Meditation 101 if you’re considering Meditation. It’s terrific introduction and good foundtion to get you on your path. I left with good tools taht I can refef back to help keep me focused.”
