This notion is prevalent among certain yoga students who are accustomed to dynamic vinyasa flows, or as I call them, the vinyasa bunnies.

They often expect classes packed with complex sequences and vibrant music. But Yin Yoga challenges this mindset by offering a still, introspective experience that focuses on interoception—awareness of what’s happening inside.

The Essence of Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is an invitation to explore this inner landscape. It emphasizes long-held poses that allow practitioners to observe changes in their bodies and minds over time.

This practice isn’t about making fancy shapes with your body more about facilitating a deeper connection with oneself.

And repetition is not redundancy; it is an opportunity for grounding and learning.

The Yin Experience

Imagine stepping away from the expectation of a ‘sparkly showboat’ sequence. Instead, settle into the quietude of your breath and the whispers of your body as it stretches and yields.

This is the richness of a Yin session. As instructors, it’s vital to guide students to notice the subtleties in their experience—how a pose may feel different as time passes or between breaths.

Dealing with Boredom in Yin Yoga

Boredom is a part of the practice, not something to shy away from. As teachers, we can skillfully use this moment to shift our students’ attention inward. Encourage them to notice the sensation’s presence, evolution, and the stories or emotions that arise.

Final Thoughts

Yin yoga’s secret power lies in its ability to transition practitioners from focusing on external movement to internal stillness. This shift nurtures a space where personal insights and healing emerge. It’s a practice of patience, self-inquiry, and ultimately, self-compassion.

Engaging with the Yin Yoga Community

I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences. Have you transitioned from a vinyasa practice to appreciating the nuances of yin? What insights have you gained? If you’re familiar.

3
00:00:12.280 –> 00:00:13.969
Nyk Danu Yoga: Welcome back, my friends.

4
00:00:14.480 –> 00:00:31.729
Nyk Danu Yoga: speaking of that, if you are familiar, if you’ve been listening to episode after episode, and you’ve been getting a lot out of these episodes you’ve been benefiting from this information. Could you please do me the honor of either reviewing it? If you have not yet offered a review, you could just pause this right now. I won’t mind. I’ll wait

5
00:00:31.930 –> 00:00:34.990
Nyk Danu Yoga: and go into either your apple or your spotify.

6
00:00:35.280 –> 00:00:47.279
Nyk Danu Yoga: You can offer 5 stars in apple. You can also add a written review in spotify. You can leave comments. So if you had a favorite episode, you can always leave me comments under that, and that is also greatly appreciated.

7
00:00:47.775 –> 00:00:59.769
Nyk Danu Yoga: If you’re not listening to this on apple or spotify, and you want to give me some feedback, you can always just get me on Instagram, either by sharing an episode in your stories and tagging me or sending me a DM.

8
00:01:00.040 –> 00:01:02.720
Nyk Danu Yoga: Also, recently I had somebody

9
00:01:03.930 –> 00:01:14.369
Nyk Danu Yoga: which was quite lovely reach out in just a random, spontaneous gratitude post in the yin Yoga network about the pod, and that was lovely to not only read

10
00:01:14.990 –> 00:01:23.009
Nyk Danu Yoga: her feedback, but also the folks that joined in under underneath as well. So you know, sharing is caring, as they say.

11
00:01:23.320 –> 00:01:50.140
Nyk Danu Yoga: and another way that you could share this if you’ve already offered a review is to take a screenshot, share it in your Instagram stories make sure you tag me at Nick Danuyoga, or at Yin Yoga podcast or both, or you could send it to a Yoga teacher, friend. So if you have a friend, that is, a Yoga teacher, that is new to teaching yin or just is obsessed with yin, or you know, even if they don’t teach in. If there’s an episode that you think is applicable.

12
00:01:50.430 –> 00:01:56.390
Nyk Danu Yoga: please feel free to forward an episode I would love that I would be grateful.

13
00:01:57.270 –> 00:02:03.510
Nyk Danu Yoga: Okay, today’s topic is, yin. Yoga is not entertainment.

14
00:02:04.340 –> 00:02:17.810
Nyk Danu Yoga: So before we dive into that 2 disclaimers, my dear friends, number one, if you’re new around these parts, I have the soul of a mermaid in the mouth of a sailor, so you can expect there could be some colorful language. So if you have small people around.

15
00:02:18.070 –> 00:02:23.349
Nyk Danu Yoga: just consider these adult conversations with adult language, grab some headphones now

16
00:02:24.040 –> 00:02:34.139
Nyk Danu Yoga: also for those of you watching on Youtube. I do have kittens that are no longer babies anymore. Sad to say, they’re teenagers, but they are still quite rambunctious.

17
00:02:34.680 –> 00:02:47.299
Nyk Danu Yoga: And one of them in particular, really likes to help me. Air quotes help me. Podcast and so if you’re watching the video, and you see me at some point, like kind of doing weird movements or like picking random kittens up.

18
00:02:47.430 –> 00:02:49.960
Nyk Danu Yoga: Just know that that could happen.

19
00:02:51.131 –> 00:02:55.289
Nyk Danu Yoga: Okay, so that’s that. That’s enough talking about that.

20
00:02:55.410 –> 00:03:04.410
Nyk Danu Yoga: And then the last thing I wanted to mention before we roll right into this is, if you are considering doing more yin training or your 1st Yin training.

21
00:03:04.670 –> 00:03:14.040
Nyk Danu Yoga: and you’ve been resonating with the perspective offered in this podcast if it’s been helpful and you’ve been having Aha moments.

22
00:03:14.160 –> 00:03:17.720
Nyk Danu Yoga: then you should probably get on the wait list of my training.

23
00:03:18.320 –> 00:03:22.169
Nyk Danu Yoga: So at the time of this recording, it runs twice a year

24
00:03:22.270 –> 00:03:27.229
Nyk Danu Yoga: in the fall and in the spring that may change, depending on when you’re listening to it, but that seems to be

25
00:03:27.370 –> 00:03:44.200
Nyk Danu Yoga: good times of year to run it. It’s all on zoom and recorded, and you have access to the recordings for a full year. So you can go back and restudy things and go over things, because, of course, no matter how skilled a teacher is. We’re only going to remember so much at the time. So

26
00:03:44.260 –> 00:04:00.629
Nyk Danu Yoga: you have the recordings for a year. It is live on Zoom, though this is not a pre recorded course, where you can just kind of log in and noodle around and then get a certificate. No, no, I don’t play that way. Instead, it’s live you show up. We engage face to face over the zoom

27
00:04:00.710 –> 00:04:17.100
Nyk Danu Yoga: so that I can see. Does anybody have questions their confusion? Are there a bunch of confused faces are there overwhelmed faces? Are people excited? And I can answer all of your questions. So that’s how the format is. It’s live on. Zoom. It just recently increased to being a hundred hours

28
00:04:17.240 –> 00:04:18.819
Nyk Danu Yoga: compared to 60.

29
00:04:18.980 –> 00:04:22.339
Nyk Danu Yoga: Some of those hours are self study time, so I believe it’s like

30
00:04:23.200 –> 00:04:34.199
Nyk Danu Yoga: I could be getting this wrong 78 with me, and then the rest is, you know, homework, reading, listening, etc. I could be slightly off on that. But it’s around that range.

31
00:04:35.580 –> 00:04:45.450
Nyk Danu Yoga: So here’s what happens, my friends, when you get on the wait list. Why in the world would you want to get on the wait list versus just hanging out and hoping you see it on social media

32
00:04:46.230 –> 00:04:50.919
Nyk Danu Yoga: when it’s live. Well, number one, hoping to see it on social media.

33
00:04:51.250 –> 00:04:57.809
Nyk Danu Yoga: Did you know that on average, only one to 2% of your followers actually see your posts?

34
00:04:58.040 –> 00:04:59.740
Nyk Danu Yoga: I know. Shocking right?

35
00:05:01.150 –> 00:05:01.920
Nyk Danu Yoga: So

36
00:05:02.140 –> 00:05:11.389
Nyk Danu Yoga: you might be thinking I’d love to take Nick’s training sometime. I’ll just keep watching her social media for her to share when the registrations open, and I will share it. That doesn’t mean you, you’ll see it.

37
00:05:11.840 –> 00:05:15.100
Nyk Danu Yoga: But when you join the waitlist, here’s what you get.

38
00:05:19.650 –> 00:05:27.409
Nyk Danu Yoga: You get some little nuggets along the way, so 1st you’ll be on the wait list. Yay, which means you’re gonna get 1st crack at registration.

39
00:05:27.810 –> 00:05:33.820
Nyk Danu Yoga: So before I kind of start plastering it everywhere, I always email the wait list first.st

40
00:05:34.420 –> 00:05:47.560
Nyk Danu Yoga: You’re also going to get a free head to toe yin sequence a little Pdf action for you that you can use for your classes, and you’re also going to get a video practice of that same sequence that you can then experience it in your body.

41
00:05:48.090 –> 00:05:53.170
Nyk Danu Yoga: You’re gonna get these podcast episodes delivered right in your inbox. So you never miss an episode.

42
00:05:53.390 –> 00:06:03.779
Nyk Danu Yoga: You’re gonna also get little sneaky peeks behind the curtain. So I have some videos that are like little samples of lessons from the training, and you’ll get some of those in your inbox as well

43
00:06:04.200 –> 00:06:06.170
Nyk Danu Yoga: as registration kicks up.

44
00:06:07.614 –> 00:06:09.680
Nyk Danu Yoga: You’ll get some yoga practice videos.

45
00:06:10.660 –> 00:06:15.020
Nyk Danu Yoga: You’ll get some of my favorite music and poetry for yin classes.

46
00:06:15.340 –> 00:06:20.860
Nyk Danu Yoga: and you’ll get invitations to join my free seasonal Mini workshops which happen quarterly.

47
00:06:20.970 –> 00:06:33.420
Nyk Danu Yoga: They’re almost always yin yin themed. I don’t think I’ve done one in a long time. That isn’t, and so those are free, and you’ll get an invitation to join those, and you’ll also get an invitation to join my paid zoom classes.

48
00:06:33.890 –> 00:06:59.470
Nyk Danu Yoga: Then, once registration does open, you’re also gonna get a 1st 5 people to sign up discount code. So it’s not an early registration discount code where you know I’m gonna send you emails every 2 days going, hey? This discount codes gonna expire on this day. No, I don’t roll like that. I got things to do instead, it’s just gonna be. Here’s the discount code, the 1st 5 of you that use it

49
00:06:59.640 –> 00:07:02.620
Nyk Danu Yoga: are going to save 25%. So that’s how

50
00:07:03.238 –> 00:07:16.500
Nyk Danu Yoga: being on the wait list is a perk compared to just kind of watching and waiting. So if you know at some point in the future whether it’s this year, next year or 2 years from now, you want to do my training.

51
00:07:16.700 –> 00:07:24.119
Nyk Danu Yoga: Please get yourself on the wait list. You can start taking advantage of all those little perks on the way to registration opening.

52
00:07:24.350 –> 00:07:29.629
Nyk Danu Yoga: and there is a link in the show notes that says cleverly, Get on the wait list. You can click that

53
00:07:29.860 –> 00:07:32.820
Nyk Danu Yoga: and it will take you to the wait list.

54
00:07:33.720 –> 00:07:34.920
Nyk Danu Yoga: All right.

55
00:07:35.654 –> 00:07:43.099
Nyk Danu Yoga: That’s that. That’s enough talking before we talk. Right? Okay? So for those of you.

56
00:07:43.240 –> 00:07:48.530
Nyk Danu Yoga: the theme that I don’t know if if I’m not alone in this, I’m sure, but the way my brain works is

57
00:07:48.700 –> 00:07:56.900
Nyk Danu Yoga: when words come in, music also comes in, and some of you may not be old enough to remember

58
00:07:58.870 –> 00:08:01.100
Nyk Danu Yoga: a little song by Nirvana.

59
00:08:02.680 –> 00:08:05.950
Nyk Danu Yoga: but this is the one that pops into my head for this episode.

60
00:08:09.140 –> 00:08:11.089
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s called smells like team spirit.

61
00:08:11.770 –> 00:08:13.620
Nyk Danu Yoga: and there’s a little section there.

62
00:08:13.830 –> 00:08:18.449
Nyk Danu Yoga: It says, very brief. It says, Here we are, now entertain us.

63
00:08:18.770 –> 00:08:29.119
Nyk Danu Yoga: and sometimes I feel like, here we are now entertain us is how Yoga students and maybe even Yoga teachers feel about their Yoga classes.

64
00:08:30.330 –> 00:08:37.019
Nyk Danu Yoga: But, dear teacher, dear Yin, teacher, that’s listening. Yin, Yoga is not entertainment.

65
00:08:37.549 –> 00:08:38.520
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s not

66
00:08:39.590 –> 00:08:49.870
Nyk Danu Yoga: now. Should we always hopefully be learning and growing as a teacher and as a practitioner, and practicing and exploring, of course.

67
00:08:50.340 –> 00:08:57.609
Nyk Danu Yoga: But this need to feel like you’re gonna have to keep things always different every time in your class.

68
00:08:58.110 –> 00:09:00.120
Nyk Danu Yoga: This is what we’re going to talk about today.

69
00:09:01.030 –> 00:09:02.299
Nyk Danu Yoga: All right. So

70
00:09:03.360 –> 00:09:12.319
Nyk Danu Yoga: first, st I want to mention that there is a certain kind of Yoga student that is quite rampant right now.

71
00:09:12.570 –> 00:09:17.710
Nyk Danu Yoga: They’re what I will affectionately call the vinyasa bunnies.

72
00:09:18.210 –> 00:09:23.299
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know the ones, and you may be one. Don’t get me wrong. I love my movement, yoga, too.

73
00:09:23.430 –> 00:09:27.110
Nyk Danu Yoga: as much as I love my yin, but I do love it.

74
00:09:27.605 –> 00:09:47.249
Nyk Danu Yoga: But I’m not a Vinyasa person, but you know the Vinyasa bunnies, the ones that absolutely love Vinyasa flow the more like sort of asymmetrical, creatively sequenced pump and playlist type of yoga class the better for them. So those are the people that I’m calling the Vinyasa bunnies

75
00:09:47.920 –> 00:10:00.460
Nyk Danu Yoga: and the Vinyasa bunnies can find. If you, as a teacher, are not skillful at guiding them, they can find yin. Yoga air quotes boring.

76
00:10:00.920 –> 00:10:03.139
Nyk Danu Yoga: I know crazy, but true.

77
00:10:03.690 –> 00:10:10.759
Nyk Danu Yoga: I remember one time reading a review. I teach only one studio here locally at the time of this recording.

78
00:10:11.235 –> 00:10:19.170
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s a very special place. I don’t usually love teaching for others. I prefer to run my own show, but this is a very special studio.

79
00:10:19.410 –> 00:10:24.000
Nyk Danu Yoga: and it’s called Ma. If anyone’s local, or if you’re visiting, come to my class.

80
00:10:24.210 –> 00:10:26.780
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s called Ma and

81
00:10:27.810 –> 00:10:38.480
Nyk Danu Yoga: I remember I was mentoring a teacher, and she had sent me a screenshot of a review of her Yoga class on Mindbody, and was feeling down in the dumps because somebody had some

82
00:10:38.900 –> 00:10:40.920
Nyk Danu Yoga: not even constructive feedback.

83
00:10:41.130 –> 00:10:46.840
Nyk Danu Yoga: and I said to her. Why are you looking at the reviews of your Yoga classes after you teach?

84
00:10:47.050 –> 00:10:55.249
Nyk Danu Yoga: And it’s again. She’s a new teacher, being hard on herself, and she’s like you don’t look at the reviews of your classes. I was like, no, I never have.

85
00:10:55.400 –> 00:11:05.500
Nyk Danu Yoga: I have good feedback. I get testimonials from people, but I don’t like. Go log on after my class into the mind, body, situation, and see if anyone’s left me. Reviews

86
00:11:05.850 –> 00:11:07.799
Nyk Danu Yoga: never even occurred to me to do so.

87
00:11:07.980 –> 00:11:19.300
Nyk Danu Yoga: but I did, because she just brought it up, and I got a lot of good reviews. But of course there was the one. There’s always the one that you know the teacher, she said that the class was

88
00:11:19.830 –> 00:11:29.030
Nyk Danu Yoga: almost identical from week to week that she’d been to 3 classes, and they were almost identical, and that I even used some of the same words

89
00:11:29.390 –> 00:11:36.520
Nyk Danu Yoga: or scripts in my class, and I couldn’t help but laugh because

90
00:11:36.840 –> 00:11:43.129
Nyk Danu Yoga: only a Vinyasa Bunny would think that every single class should be different.

91
00:11:43.470 –> 00:11:45.460
Nyk Danu Yoga: 1st of all, I will say

92
00:11:46.330 –> 00:11:50.850
Nyk Danu Yoga: in the Og yin Asanas. So if you look at Paul’s book.

93
00:11:51.325 –> 00:12:11.214
Nyk Danu Yoga: you’re gonna see, there’s very few poses in there now. Those of us like myself that have been teaching this for a long time and are kind of senior teachers have added many, many shapes to the inexperience. So there’s a lot more now, especially things for upper body, and you know I’ve added some extra twists and some extra backbends and things like that.

94
00:12:11.660 –> 00:12:25.669
Nyk Danu Yoga: but it is a more limited practice as far as the poses go. So yeah, odds are if I’m getting you to do something for your hip flexors in a class. I’m going to have one to 3 options. So there’s probably going to be some repeat.

95
00:12:26.491 –> 00:12:32.400
Nyk Danu Yoga: So yeah, that was feedback that I got, and I just kind of laughed, and it was like, Well.

96
00:12:33.110 –> 00:12:38.210
Nyk Danu Yoga: yep, there’s going to be repetition, and

97
00:12:39.420 –> 00:12:48.109
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know there’s 2 choices as a teacher. When you get feedback like that you can, you know. 1st of all, I always look at feedback to see how valid is it.

98
00:12:48.280 –> 00:12:49.479
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know, if there’s

99
00:12:49.660 –> 00:12:58.659
Nyk Danu Yoga: if they’ve said something, and it’s not something that I’m aware of that I’m doing. And I actually do think that taking their advice would be an improvement to my class. I absolutely will.

100
00:12:59.180 –> 00:13:04.699
Nyk Danu Yoga: But the class being boring, you know, too much repetition.

101
00:13:04.960 –> 00:13:11.790
Nyk Danu Yoga: No, you know. I use mindfulness in my practice when I teach.

102
00:13:12.090 –> 00:13:16.099
Nyk Danu Yoga: Mindfulness has some areas that are going to repeat.

103
00:13:16.530 –> 00:13:26.329
Nyk Danu Yoga: and I’ll give you a little secret here, my friends. Now, Yoga, teachers don’t realize this when we’re trying so hard to be the sparkly showboat of Yoga classes

104
00:13:26.470 –> 00:13:31.680
Nyk Danu Yoga: that actually repetition is more soothing to your students nervous system.

105
00:13:32.330 –> 00:13:37.829
Nyk Danu Yoga: When someone is in a state of dysregulation, which I would argue that most of the world is

106
00:13:38.020 –> 00:13:49.389
Nyk Danu Yoga: having consistency actually helps them to shift from their fight, flight or freeze response and into their parasympathetic or their relaxation response.

107
00:13:50.160 –> 00:13:56.110
Nyk Danu Yoga: So then, the question goes, where do we draw that line between?

108
00:13:56.380 –> 00:14:00.660
Nyk Danu Yoga: I’m doing exactly the same sequence which I do not do, by the way.

109
00:14:01.180 –> 00:14:27.939
Nyk Danu Yoga: and there’s going to be some repetition here, because there’s only so many poses, and I also try to teach really excessively. So I do tend to favor certain hip openers over others, because, you know, I know most of my students, especially especially the ones not at the studio. I know them quite well, and I know who’s got knee issues. And so, rather than mess around with like 5 different options that people can’t do. Anyway, I’m going to just give them the one I know they can all do

110
00:14:28.020 –> 00:14:32.650
Nyk Danu Yoga: with the invitation for them to choose a different option if they would like.

111
00:14:33.510 –> 00:14:36.940
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I got a comment like that from a Vinyasa, Bunny.

112
00:14:37.240 –> 00:14:44.220
Nyk Danu Yoga: That’s 1 of the reasons that you know I did. The 1st episode on in Yoga being boring

113
00:14:44.530 –> 00:14:46.710
Nyk Danu Yoga: how to keep classes inspiring.

114
00:14:47.830 –> 00:15:00.180
Nyk Danu Yoga: And then recently, in my teacher training you know, one of the teacher trainees made a comment that, like, you know, if you can use this pose and this pose and this pose?

115
00:15:01.760 –> 00:15:17.170
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know we were comparing and contrasting heart melting to fish pose on blocks so supported, fish on blocks. So not on a bolster. And I was saying that if I have a choice in my sequence. I’m going to take supported fish on blocks.

116
00:15:17.260 –> 00:15:42.460
Nyk Danu Yoga: hands down any day of the week, because a it opens up those areas that I’m looking for more effectively. But it’s also more accessible that there’s a big percentage of the population that can’t do heart melting pose because of limitations in their shoulder when they reach their arms up overhead. And so they would just be kind of struggling in that shape. And yeah, you can do the half version, and you can give props and all that.

117
00:15:42.760 –> 00:15:47.489
Nyk Danu Yoga: or I could just flip them on their back and give them supported fish on blocks

118
00:15:48.070 –> 00:15:55.496
Nyk Danu Yoga: now and then she but she had said, you know. Well, you know, having these other options, of course, keeps class.

119
00:15:56.740 –> 00:16:00.079
Nyk Danu Yoga: what did she say? Interesting, or keeps the students from getting bored?

120
00:16:00.530 –> 00:16:04.569
Nyk Danu Yoga: And I I did look at her, and I said, Yin Yoga is not entertainment

121
00:16:04.830 –> 00:16:08.990
Nyk Danu Yoga: right? I am not, Netflix, I am not Disney.

122
00:16:10.010 –> 00:16:14.369
Nyk Danu Yoga: I am not here to entertain you in your Yoga class.

123
00:16:15.070 –> 00:16:16.729
Nyk Danu Yoga: What I am here to do

124
00:16:16.860 –> 00:16:22.269
Nyk Danu Yoga: is to hold brave space, for you have an episode on that as well with the lovely grace

125
00:16:22.680 –> 00:16:31.290
Nyk Danu Yoga: all of these episodes. By the way, there’s a document in the show notes that says all episodes at a glance. That’s a Google doc that lists literally every episode

126
00:16:31.670 –> 00:16:37.740
Nyk Danu Yoga: with a link. So if you are new to the pod and you want to binge, that’s a great way to do it. Or if you’re just like

127
00:16:38.130 –> 00:16:44.400
Nyk Danu Yoga: there was a topic. And I wanted to look and see if it’s there. It’s all in that Google, Doc. So you can access all of them there.

128
00:16:45.960 –> 00:16:51.330
Nyk Danu Yoga: So my job is to guide skillfully guide a practice

129
00:16:51.470 –> 00:17:01.919
Nyk Danu Yoga: that serves the the needs of most of the people in the room to the best of my ability, and to hold brave space for them for whatever may come up during that practice.

130
00:17:02.430 –> 00:17:03.450
Nyk Danu Yoga: That’s my job.

131
00:17:04.020 –> 00:17:06.810
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s not to entertain you. I’m not a rock star.

132
00:17:07.690 –> 00:17:27.880
Nyk Danu Yoga: And so I think this idea that we have 1st of all, it’s twofold sometimes this idea that we have that we need to entertain our students is our own pressure. We’re putting on ourselves. Or maybe we, as a teacher, are bored of our sequences. Well, then, absolutely switch them up if you want to, but just acknowledge that it’s you that’s bored.

133
00:17:28.069 –> 00:17:45.800
Nyk Danu Yoga: not your students. Right? So sometimes we we transfer our our boredom or our feeling of being predictability on the students when actually, they’re quite content to just keep going along as they have been with their favorite poses. And it’s us that is feeling like we need to mix it up a little.

134
00:17:46.420 –> 00:17:55.299
Nyk Danu Yoga: So, 1st of all, acknowledge, is it really that the students are bored, or is it you? And then, if they are, if it is that the students are bored well again, there are

135
00:17:55.970 –> 00:18:06.350
Nyk Danu Yoga: many more poses now available to us than were in when I 1st started training with Paul. The the repertoire of poses that Paul has is actually quite small.

136
00:18:06.500 –> 00:18:13.250
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s sort of like basic shapes with many variations for different body types, but it didn’t even include upper body.

137
00:18:13.710 –> 00:18:18.700
Nyk Danu Yoga: I think the last time I trained with them they introduced one thing for our next

138
00:18:19.144 –> 00:18:31.760
Nyk Danu Yoga: and I’ve done a whole episode on upper body in, so I won’t get into that too much. But if you’re looking at these books and you’re like shit. There’s not a lot here to choose from. Well, then, of course you’re going to have repetition.

139
00:18:32.100 –> 00:18:34.859
Nyk Danu Yoga: and repetition is not bad.

140
00:18:37.370 –> 00:18:38.330
Nyk Danu Yoga: However.

141
00:18:38.440 –> 00:18:48.050
Nyk Danu Yoga: also, there are many more poses that have been added on by other Yin teachers over the years. I did. Again. I talked a whole bunch about that in the

142
00:18:48.230 –> 00:18:54.110
Nyk Danu Yoga: upper body yin episode. So I’m not going to get into kind of how I came to that and all that. But just know that

143
00:18:54.900 –> 00:18:59.150
Nyk Danu Yoga: when I train teachers. You’re not just gonna get the classes or the

144
00:18:59.860 –> 00:19:11.130
Nyk Danu Yoga: just know that when I train teachers, you’re not only going to get the poses that were originally in Paul’s book. There’s a whole bunch more that I go into. So it does leave me some room for creative expression.

145
00:19:11.250 –> 00:19:14.219
Nyk Danu Yoga: I have several upper body poses. I have

146
00:19:14.770 –> 00:19:28.859
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know, a few hip openers. I have an additional twist or 2, a few extra backbends that were not in my original training, so I can definitely choose things and keep the sequences a little more fresh.

147
00:19:29.950 –> 00:19:39.840
Nyk Danu Yoga: but also so with that said as a teacher again, it’s not my job to entertain the students.

148
00:19:40.120 –> 00:19:42.429
Nyk Danu Yoga: If a Vinyasa Bunny comes in

149
00:19:42.730 –> 00:19:47.150
Nyk Danu Yoga: and they’re disappointed because we only did few poses.

150
00:19:47.300 –> 00:19:51.979
Nyk Danu Yoga: and we held them a long time. Well, that’s just yen. So there you go

151
00:19:54.140 –> 00:20:01.880
Nyk Danu Yoga: or if they feel like, you know. Oh, we did some of the same poses this week that I did last time I came here. Yep, that’s gonna happen, too.

152
00:20:01.990 –> 00:20:13.040
Nyk Danu Yoga: Did you know there are whole styles of Yoga where you do the same series over and over and over again until you actually get good at it, and then you move to the second series and etc. It’s called Ashtanga.

153
00:20:13.470 –> 00:20:18.460
Nyk Danu Yoga: So it’s not like which is interesting because the current vinyasa

154
00:20:20.780 –> 00:20:26.699
Nyk Danu Yoga: phenom, I guess you could call it in North America is actually based on ashtranga yoga.

155
00:20:27.010 –> 00:20:42.600
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s just. And so was Power Yoga. Both of them were based on Ashtanga Yoga, and then just sort of taken away and and run with as far as sequencing. And, you know, letting go of some of the rules, and I’m not, you know, defending the Ashtanga tradition sequence. I don’t actually

156
00:20:42.780 –> 00:21:07.109
Nyk Danu Yoga: love the the you know, whole primary secondary, you know 3rd series, etc. system, simply because, due to my own bone structure. I can’t do shoulder stand well, and so like I never would have ever been able to move on in other poses that I could do comfortably with facility simply because I hadn’t completed that 1st series. So it’s not really a system that I admire per se.

157
00:21:07.250 –> 00:21:21.359
Nyk Danu Yoga: But I’m just pointing out that it is out there, and that there are thousands and thousands and thousands of Yoga teachers and students doing exactly the same sequence again and again and again. And it happens in hot yoga, too.

158
00:21:22.010 –> 00:21:25.359
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s the same. What 26 poses over and over and over again.

159
00:21:25.820 –> 00:21:30.950
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I say, this, dear Yin teachers, so that you don’t feel like it’s only yin

160
00:21:31.120 –> 00:21:39.049
Nyk Danu Yoga: that does this like repeat, repeat, repeat of poses. Thing. No, there’s whole styles of Yoga, where you never get any variety whatsoever.

161
00:21:39.230 –> 00:21:46.719
Nyk Danu Yoga: and people love them, and they’re probably more grounding to their nervous system because they know what’s coming

162
00:21:46.990 –> 00:21:53.230
Nyk Danu Yoga: right. It’s easier to fall into this relaxed state in your nervous system again, if you know what is coming up.

163
00:21:54.070 –> 00:21:58.350
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I wanted to mention that, and

164
00:21:59.070 –> 00:22:21.540
Nyk Danu Yoga: that again. It’s not our job to entertain our students now, what you could do and what I would do had that person come up to me before the class, or with verbal feedback after the class versus written on an app, and you know no way to respond there. If they had come up and said, You know, I’m finding that this practice is kind of boring like. It’s like the same poses. And

165
00:22:21.710 –> 00:22:27.680
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know you say some of the same things, and blah blah! I would have said, – yes.

166
00:22:28.290 –> 00:22:34.670
Nyk Danu Yoga: because the point of this practice is not the shapes. It’s not these funny shapes that we’re making with our body.

167
00:22:35.250 –> 00:22:52.389
Nyk Danu Yoga: and then I would have had an Aha! As to the state of mind of that student, and I could have more skillfully with my words, guided them to all of the wonderful things about a yin practice that don’t happen in a movement-based practice, simply because you’re moving too quickly.

168
00:22:53.230 –> 00:22:56.650
Nyk Danu Yoga: and the 1st one that I’ll highlight is interoception.

169
00:22:57.240 –> 00:23:00.000
Nyk Danu Yoga: I’ve also done, and there’s also been an episode on that

170
00:23:00.150 –> 00:23:10.049
Nyk Danu Yoga: interoception for those of you who don’t want to listen to the whole episode. Interoception. I’m going to just give a very lay person. Definition is an awareness of what’s happening inside your body.

171
00:23:10.820 –> 00:23:15.959
Nyk Danu Yoga: Well, that’s actually pretty dang hard to do in a Vinyasa class, because you’re moving so quickly

172
00:23:16.600 –> 00:23:20.130
Nyk Danu Yoga: until Shavasan, right? Or until there’s a still pose.

173
00:23:20.280 –> 00:23:21.210
Nyk Danu Yoga: So

174
00:23:21.530 –> 00:23:37.110
Nyk Danu Yoga: that’s 1 of Yin Yoga’s secret superpowers is this gift of interoception? Because we come into the shape, and we’re in there for minutes at a time. It gives me as a practitioner, or me as a teacher, an opportunity to

175
00:23:37.340 –> 00:23:41.109
Nyk Danu Yoga: guide people as to what is happening in your body.

176
00:23:41.430 –> 00:23:48.860
Nyk Danu Yoga: There’s this whole inner landscape inside of you that most people do not even explore at all.

177
00:23:49.730 –> 00:23:55.720
Nyk Danu Yoga: And so it does take some skill as a teacher to explain that, and perhaps to offer some prompts

178
00:23:55.970 –> 00:24:10.209
Nyk Danu Yoga: as to you know how people can get more in touch with what is happening inside of them, and less focused on this sort of fluff of like how many warrior flow? Sequence, Chaturanga surprises did I have in this class?

179
00:24:11.110 –> 00:24:19.420
Nyk Danu Yoga: Now, what might actually be surprising is when you sit still and quiet for a few minutes. How hard it is for you to notice the sensation in your hamstring

180
00:24:19.860 –> 00:24:21.280
Nyk Danu Yoga: for minutes at a time.

181
00:24:21.940 –> 00:24:32.190
Nyk Danu Yoga: So it’s not that there’s nothing going on in a yin practice. It’s not that a yin practice is boring. It’s not even that a yin practice can’t be entertaining.

182
00:24:32.380 –> 00:24:36.940
Nyk Danu Yoga: but it does require a more inward experience, and I would argue

183
00:24:37.300 –> 00:24:42.799
Nyk Danu Yoga: a more mature and I don’t mean age wise. I just mean personality type.

184
00:24:43.431 –> 00:24:45.960
Nyk Danu Yoga: way of looking at the practice.

185
00:24:46.250 –> 00:24:53.509
Nyk Danu Yoga: Now, that being said, if somebody doesn’t have that maturity, you can still coach them on that when they’re in your class.

186
00:24:53.760 –> 00:24:56.890
Nyk Danu Yoga: So, for example, mindfulness.

187
00:24:57.100 –> 00:25:05.150
Nyk Danu Yoga: I will guide my students through a guided mindfulness, and the intention of that is to try to bring them into this place of

188
00:25:05.270 –> 00:25:27.069
Nyk Danu Yoga: leaving sort of the outside world, and this outer experience of the Yoga practice and into their own body. And so we notice things like we start with sounds around us. Then we notice the air in our skin, then we notice the weight of the body on the earth and sensations there and then we notice breath, and we start to become aware of sensations.

189
00:25:27.130 –> 00:25:38.829
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I’m I’m intentionally using my words. And this guided mindfulness experience to pull them from this sort of external to the internal to what’s happening in their body.

190
00:25:39.800 –> 00:25:52.410
Nyk Danu Yoga: And then, when they’re in the practice, I’m also going to guide those cues. You know. I’m going to say things like come to 50 to 60% of the most you could do. Well, guess what you can’t do that unless you’re paying attention to what’s happening inside your body

191
00:25:52.980 –> 00:25:54.420
Nyk Danu Yoga: right? You can’t

192
00:25:54.550 –> 00:25:59.079
Nyk Danu Yoga: figure out what is 50 to 60% if you’re not paying attention to the sensations in your body.

193
00:26:00.590 –> 00:26:06.400
Nyk Danu Yoga: and then even queues like, I’m sharing queues because I know that a lot of you teachers will be like.

194
00:26:06.570 –> 00:26:13.199
Nyk Danu Yoga: Yeah, yeah, okay, we get it. We’re on board. But like, what the hell do I say so? Another thing that I like to say often is.

195
00:26:13.350 –> 00:26:16.710
Nyk Danu Yoga: notice how the sensation is in your body.

196
00:26:17.610 –> 00:26:24.659
Nyk Danu Yoga: and if you could describe it to somebody who’s not in the room practicing or not doing this pose right now, how would you do that?

197
00:26:25.140 –> 00:26:29.120
Nyk Danu Yoga: Would it be a word, a light, a shape, a color, a sound.

198
00:26:29.590 –> 00:26:31.840
Nyk Danu Yoga: How would you describe this sensation?

199
00:26:33.230 –> 00:26:38.099
Nyk Danu Yoga: Is the sensation the same right now as it was when we 1st came into this pose.

200
00:26:40.030 –> 00:26:45.960
Nyk Danu Yoga: And what about now for now, or how about now?

201
00:26:47.330 –> 00:26:58.429
Nyk Danu Yoga: And if you track the sensation with your mind’s eye, if you get curious and observant, do you notice that it changes over the time that we’re here from beginning to the end?

202
00:26:59.500 –> 00:27:03.860
Nyk Danu Yoga: Does the sensation feel different on your inhale versus your exhale?

203
00:27:04.490 –> 00:27:08.180
Nyk Danu Yoga: Oftentimes it does so I can cue them to do that.

204
00:27:08.350 –> 00:27:13.840
Nyk Danu Yoga: I could ask them to notice if there’s any stories or opinions

205
00:27:14.000 –> 00:27:17.979
Nyk Danu Yoga: that are coming up in the mind about the sensation they’re feeling in their body.

206
00:27:18.120 –> 00:27:21.879
Nyk Danu Yoga: So you see how I just took them from this

207
00:27:22.140 –> 00:27:41.410
Nyk Danu Yoga: flashy, sparkly showboat, Vinyasa Bunny, here I am! Now entertain me. Give me a super complicated sequence, that’s all on one side before I switch to the other, and let’s put a bunch of chaturangas and downward dogs in between each one, too, while we’re at it. I took them from that sort of expectation

208
00:27:41.880 –> 00:27:51.130
Nyk Danu Yoga: which is all very external. What shapes am I making with my body. In what order, how predictable are they? What fun things did you throw in that I’ve never tried before.

209
00:27:51.640 –> 00:27:59.819
Nyk Danu Yoga: I’m taking them away from that into the entertainment, if you want to call it that being what the hell is happening inside your body

210
00:28:01.040 –> 00:28:04.870
Nyk Danu Yoga: and inside your mind and your emotions.

211
00:28:05.390 –> 00:28:15.369
Nyk Danu Yoga: So it’s not that there isn’t things to notice in a yin practice, dear teacher, there is plenty to notice, but you may have to guide them

212
00:28:15.560 –> 00:28:16.679
Nyk Danu Yoga: to those.

213
00:28:18.080 –> 00:28:26.029
Nyk Danu Yoga: and you can’t necessarily know who needs to be guided to those and who doesn’t. So I don’t mention all of the things that I just said to you in every

214
00:28:26.130 –> 00:28:28.160
Nyk Danu Yoga: class, because I want to work

215
00:28:28.340 –> 00:28:32.489
Nyk Danu Yoga: my way into a quiet practice. I always do the guided mindfulness

216
00:28:32.820 –> 00:28:41.589
Nyk Danu Yoga: I might always, and I might pick one or 2 of the other things that I said to guide them into. And this really just goes on instinct based on what I’m observing in the room.

217
00:28:41.930 –> 00:28:47.620
Nyk Danu Yoga: But if somebody, you know, I do a check in at the beginning of class to see if anyone’s new to Yin, and if nobody has said that they’re new to yin

218
00:28:48.343 –> 00:28:53.230
Nyk Danu Yoga: and I do that by just getting everyone to when they’re lying down, put one hand on their belly if they’re new to yin

219
00:28:54.053 –> 00:28:57.869
Nyk Danu Yoga: and if no one’s new to yin, but they’re still bored.

220
00:28:58.500 –> 00:29:00.140
Nyk Danu Yoga: there’s no way I could know that.

221
00:29:00.630 –> 00:29:10.309
Nyk Danu Yoga: so you know, certainly didn’t beat myself up over the fact that a student was bored, that she came to 3 classes. And, oh, my God! We repeated some of the poses in those 3 classes.

222
00:29:10.860 –> 00:29:15.080
Nyk Danu Yoga: Now, had I known, of course, that she was having that experience, I could have spoken to it.

223
00:29:15.230 –> 00:29:20.939
Nyk Danu Yoga: I could have explained that, like, you know, sometimes there’s a little bit of a perspective shift

224
00:29:21.060 –> 00:29:41.130
Nyk Danu Yoga: when we start practicing yin. And if we’re used to, if our expectations are this sort of Vinyasa Bunny class, this like really interesting flow class with a pump and jam and playlist, and all these unpredictable transitions, but yet with the predictability, of course, of Chaturangas and downward dogs in between, because, God forbid! We

225
00:29:41.280 –> 00:29:43.159
Nyk Danu Yoga: transition in any other way.

226
00:29:43.799 –> 00:30:00.929
Nyk Danu Yoga: You know, if that’s what someone’s expecting, and I know that then I can speak to it right then I can say that actually, the attention is a little bit more subtle and a little bit more inward in yin, but that it’s just as rich, and I might argue more important.

227
00:30:04.450 –> 00:30:07.439
Nyk Danu Yoga: because when our students take the time

228
00:30:07.610 –> 00:30:11.950
Nyk Danu Yoga: to be still and quiet and curious about what’s going on with them.

229
00:30:12.500 –> 00:30:15.439
Nyk Danu Yoga: They’re bound to have insights into their own experience.

230
00:30:15.790 –> 00:30:18.000
Nyk Danu Yoga: whether that be into their thoughts.

231
00:30:18.810 –> 00:30:30.000
Nyk Danu Yoga: You know I had a dear friend who was a very seasoned meditator done tons of long meditation retreats. So she was very aware of the fact that when she sat still and quiet her mind would act up.

232
00:30:30.390 –> 00:30:32.740
Nyk Danu Yoga: But she was an Ashtanga yogi.

233
00:30:33.060 –> 00:30:42.170
Nyk Danu Yoga: and so she was used to, you know, kind of moving through the poses at a more quick pace, and when she did a yin class, she said to me.

234
00:30:42.310 –> 00:30:43.920
Nyk Danu Yoga: I could not believe

235
00:30:44.710 –> 00:30:52.169
Nyk Danu Yoga: how hard that was, because she’s like my mind was just going the whole time I was sitting in the poses, and it was like

236
00:30:52.280 –> 00:30:55.190
Nyk Danu Yoga: thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking.

237
00:30:55.550 –> 00:31:04.119
Nyk Danu Yoga: right. So even somebody who’s got a very seasoned meditation practice, and knows about this tendency of our mind to do all this

238
00:31:04.360 –> 00:31:12.439
Nyk Danu Yoga: chatter. And you know the soap operas and the circuses that our mind takes us on even somebody who was very seasoned meditator and knew that

239
00:31:12.840 –> 00:31:17.819
Nyk Danu Yoga: still found Yin challenging because she had to shift her mindset from.

240
00:31:18.020 –> 00:31:24.959
Nyk Danu Yoga: instead of my mind focusing on the movement I now have to focus on what comes up in the stillness.

241
00:31:26.020 –> 00:31:32.009
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I’m going to say that one more time instead of my mind focusing on the movement.

242
00:31:32.360 –> 00:31:38.890
Nyk Danu Yoga: my mind is now having to shift gears to focus on what is happening in the stillness.

243
00:31:39.180 –> 00:31:42.409
Nyk Danu Yoga: That doesn’t mean that there’s not plenty happening.

244
00:31:43.640 –> 00:31:44.590
Nyk Danu Yoga: So

245
00:31:46.150 –> 00:31:53.540
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know, all of this interoception can be challenging for people. And this is why Yin Yoga is not an easy practice.

246
00:31:55.700 –> 00:32:02.700
Nyk Danu Yoga: It takes a lot of patience and persistence and willingness

247
00:32:02.830 –> 00:32:07.680
Nyk Danu Yoga: to sit in in your stuff, whether that’s sensations in your body, or

248
00:32:07.810 –> 00:32:11.969
Nyk Danu Yoga: mental emotional stuff or boredom all of it.

249
00:32:12.080 –> 00:32:14.830
Nyk Danu Yoga: and I would argue that actually, boredom is probably a

250
00:32:15.560 –> 00:32:17.720
Nyk Danu Yoga: common part of a yin practice.

251
00:32:18.910 –> 00:32:24.179
Nyk Danu Yoga: However, dear teacher, that does not mean that you need to stop your students from being bored

252
00:32:24.720 –> 00:32:28.059
Nyk Danu Yoga: because boredom is part of the practice.

253
00:32:28.870 –> 00:32:29.740
Nyk Danu Yoga: So

254
00:32:30.810 –> 00:32:45.110
Nyk Danu Yoga: you do not need to feel like you always need to have a totally different sequence with totally different poses than you did in the last 3 months. Well, 1st of all, good luck with that, because there’s only so many poses, you can only string them together in so many orders. You can get creative, of course.

255
00:32:45.560 –> 00:32:49.100
Nyk Danu Yoga: So 1st of all, be realistic with your expectations.

256
00:32:49.600 –> 00:33:11.960
Nyk Danu Yoga: Secondly, understand that actually some repetition is actually really good for your students nervous system, and that there are whole styles of yoga out there that are repetitive right. So the Ashtanga tradition. There’s a primary series. Then there’s another series, then I can’t remember how many there are 4 or something, and those are the same poses over and over and over again.

257
00:33:12.340 –> 00:33:20.750
Nyk Danu Yoga: This is how we learn repetition is how we learn, and it’s also better for our nervous system.

258
00:33:20.960 –> 00:33:23.670
Nyk Danu Yoga: Also, Vikram yoga.

259
00:33:23.880 –> 00:33:36.209
Nyk Danu Yoga: Same thing, same poses. Now, I’m not necessarily in love with either of those styles of Yoga myself. For my own practice. They’re not. They’re not suitable for me and what I need. But I’m just saying that there are whole styles of yoga out there

260
00:33:36.490 –> 00:33:50.110
Nyk Danu Yoga: that have a predictable sequence that they go through every single time. I’m not 100% sure. But I believe there’s a lot of repetition in the Shivananda tradition as well. I can’t say for sure, because I’ve never studied it in depth. But just from what I’ve seen.

261
00:33:50.510 –> 00:33:51.510
Nyk Danu Yoga: So

262
00:33:51.990 –> 00:34:02.609
Nyk Danu Yoga: somewhere in some students heads, they get this idea that, like every class, is supposed to be entertaining, and it’s supposed to be this fun magical adventure, this sparkly showboat of

263
00:34:02.780 –> 00:34:17.220
Nyk Danu Yoga: really cool transitions that they never have done before, of course, but always with chaturangas and downward dogs in between, because we can’t leave those out and if that’s their expectation, then yeah, the end is going to feel a little boring for them.

264
00:34:17.790 –> 00:34:23.859
Nyk Danu Yoga: but it is not your job to entertain them in. Yoga is not entertainment.

265
00:34:24.340 –> 00:34:29.009
Nyk Danu Yoga: I would argue, in fact, that all Yoga is not entertainment, but some of it

266
00:34:29.460 –> 00:34:34.359
Nyk Danu Yoga: more easily caters to the people who think that Yoga should be entertaining.

267
00:34:35.639 –> 00:34:42.580
Nyk Danu Yoga: and that hopefully, you’ve gotten some tips as a teacher on ways that you can talk about

268
00:34:42.690 –> 00:34:48.450
Nyk Danu Yoga: the differences in yin from other styles of Yoga. It’s not just as simple as

269
00:34:48.630 –> 00:34:56.370
Nyk Danu Yoga: that’s a movement style. This is a stillness style. Yes, this is true, but also what are all the other aspects that are different?

270
00:34:57.130 –> 00:34:58.670
Nyk Danu Yoga: Proprioception

271
00:34:59.390 –> 00:35:28.329
Nyk Danu Yoga: is what you really focus on in movement styles of Yoga, which is like, Where is my body in space? Proprioception? Right? So if you’re standing at the front of your mat, and your teacher says, step your foot back to a high lunge, knowing where the hell the back of your mat is, and where your foot is in space, and getting it to land there. Movement forms of Yoga are really good for that, for proprioception that’s called proprioception. But Yin’s secret magical superpower is interoception.

272
00:35:28.600 –> 00:35:37.450
Nyk Danu Yoga: An awareness of what is happening inside of us which could be breath, thoughts, sensations, feelings, emotions.

273
00:35:38.060 –> 00:35:39.060
Nyk Danu Yoga: all of it.

274
00:35:39.860 –> 00:35:42.990
Nyk Danu Yoga: And this is where Yin Yoga really shines.

275
00:35:43.180 –> 00:35:52.939
Nyk Danu Yoga: And I would argue that unless that student thinks that they’re a boring person and that their felt lived moment to moment, experience is is boring.

276
00:35:53.260 –> 00:35:58.650
Nyk Danu Yoga: Then how could they not be entertained by all the things happening within them.

277
00:35:59.080 –> 00:36:03.630
Nyk Danu Yoga: However, it might take you as the teacher to just shift that paradigm a little bit

278
00:36:03.840 –> 00:36:09.049
Nyk Danu Yoga: if somebody’s used to moving, moving, moving, going, going, going.

279
00:36:09.480 –> 00:36:34.290
Nyk Danu Yoga: and all of the kind of fancy fun transitions. And you know, super loud music that they can sing along to. And if that’s their experience, and then they come into your yin class, and maybe there’s a little bit of atmosphere, music or no music at all, even. And they’re just asked to be like lying still and quiet. And there’s a lot less poses because we’re holding them longer. So that means there’s less variety. And you know they’re not being entertained by you

280
00:36:34.540 –> 00:36:36.120
Nyk Danu Yoga: talking the whole time.

281
00:36:36.410 –> 00:36:42.550
Nyk Danu Yoga: You. It might be helpful to point that out that this practice is very different in these key ways.

282
00:36:42.690 –> 00:36:49.789
Nyk Danu Yoga: However, here’s where our mind can pay attention to this inner experience, this inner landscape.

283
00:36:50.690 –> 00:37:01.769
Nyk Danu Yoga: How does my body feel? Where is the sensation? What does the sensation feel like? Does it change over time? What is my mind telling me about this? Are there emotions coming up, etc, etc, etc.

284
00:37:02.020 –> 00:37:07.489
Nyk Danu Yoga: So there’s so much opportunity for a rich experience in a yin practice.

285
00:37:07.710 –> 00:37:16.280
Nyk Danu Yoga: But it’s an inward experience. It’s more introception, and in yoga is not entertainment.

286
00:37:16.670 –> 00:37:21.590
Nyk Danu Yoga: nor should it be, nor should you feel pressured, so

287
00:37:22.390 –> 00:37:39.419
Nyk Danu Yoga: I hope this is helpful for any of you who do have those kind of vinyasa or power bunnies that come into your class, and sort of show up with that attitude of the Nirvana song that is playing in my head of Here we are now entertain us. Remember, dear teacher.

288
00:37:39.610 –> 00:37:42.349
Nyk Danu Yoga: it’s not your job to be entertaining.

289
00:37:42.910 –> 00:37:47.900
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s not your job. Yoga is not. Entertainment in Yoga is definitely not entertainment.

290
00:37:49.650 –> 00:37:55.429
Nyk Danu Yoga: Your job is to skillfully create a class that works for the majority of the people in the room.

291
00:37:55.850 –> 00:38:06.130
Nyk Danu Yoga: and to hold brave space and to guide them to the subtler, more quiet aspects of a yin practice that they might be missing if they’re all up in their head.

292
00:38:06.310 –> 00:38:09.350
Nyk Danu Yoga: focused on the fact that they’re still in this pose.

293
00:38:09.500 –> 00:38:16.269
Nyk Danu Yoga: and that they’re bored, and even explaining that boredom is part of the process could be a valuable thing.

294
00:38:17.250 –> 00:38:23.090
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I hope that’s helpful, dear teacher, take the pressure off yourself, and Yoga’s not entertainment.

295
00:38:23.270 –> 00:38:38.439
Nyk Danu Yoga: Hopefully. You’ve also gotten some tips, for when you can see those Vinyasa bunnies kind of twitching out in their poses, and you’ve got some ideas on ways that you can address or guide them into the other aspect of Yoga practice, which is this internal experience.

296
00:38:39.140 –> 00:39:07.999
Nyk Danu Yoga: And I would love to know in the comments your feedback on this. So if you’re on spotify, there’s a comment feature. If you’re on Youtube, there’s a comment feature also, if you are watching or listening to this on my blog which lives on my website, there’s a comment feature. So if this sparked something in you. I would love to know did you ever feel this way about yin yourself, especially those of you that were 1st Vinyasa bunnies who have now transitioned over to Yin.

297
00:39:08.130 –> 00:39:27.680
Nyk Danu Yoga: What helped you with this transition from kind of like? Here I am. Now entertain me to this more subtle, quiet practice or what other teaching tips do you have that you could share with everybody about getting people to stop viewing this as entertainment.

298
00:39:27.820 –> 00:39:36.269
Nyk Danu Yoga: and instead, as a deep part of their healing journey. And dare I even say, perhaps, their spiritual practice?

299
00:39:37.040 –> 00:39:42.379
Nyk Danu Yoga: All right, let me know, and until next time, my friends bye, for now.

Want to support my work?
