Fall and The Metal Element: An Overview

As we start transitioning into fall, it’s a time linked deeply with the metal element in TCM. Fall marks a shift from the extroverted, yang energy of summer to a more introverted, yin phase.

The Emotional Aspect of Fall

In both TCM and Taoist thought, fall is a time for letting go and is connected to the emotion of grief. This grief could be as simple as missing summer or something deeper.

Fall is my second favorite season, after spring. Although I adore fall’s colors and cozy sweaters, scarves, and boots  I do grieve the reduction in daylight hours more than anything.

Practical Tips for Embracing the Season

Rest and Reflection

Fall is a time for introspection. It’s the perfect moment to rest, reflect, and let go of unneeded energies, relationships, habits, or even physical clutter. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Organize Your Space: This is a great time to purge your home of unused clothing and physical clutter. My method? I turn all of my clothes hangers backward and, at the end of the season, donate the items still facing backward.
  • Digital Decluttering: Go through your emails and files, and delete anything unnecessary.
  • Energetic Purge: Let go of habits that no longer serve you.

Nourishment and Hydration

In autumn, focus on cooked food over raw to best support your lungs and large intestine. Some suggestions:

  • Warm Fluids: Broths, soups, teas, and warm water are excellent choices.
  • Seasonal Foods: Pears, squash, pumpkin, kale, broccoli, walnuts, and hemp seeds nourish the body.
  • Practical Tip: Start your day with a mug of warm water before diving into your morning beverages.

Sleep and Cozy Comforts

This season calls for more rest. Dim your lights, light some candles, and perhaps, switch to fairy lights to create a cozy atmosphere. It’s a time to slow down and align with the natural rhythm of the season.

Protect Your Health

Your defensive energy, or immunity, is associated with your lungs in TCM. A simple way to protect yourself from the cold is by wearing a scarf. Keeping your neck warm shields your body from seasonal ailments.

Conclusion

This season is all about preparing, both physically and emotionally, for the colder months ahead. Whether it’s organizing your home or nourishing your body with seasonal foods, these practices can help you transition smoothly into fall and improve your overall well-being.
