The Five Elements: An Overview

In this episode, we’re going to talk about the Five Elements according to Daoism and TCM, which are closely tied to Feng Shui. It’s a broad, subject that I cover more in-depth in my teacher training, but today’s session will serve as a basic overview—or as I prefer to call it, a “Five Elements 101.”

These elemental theories go into a lot of interconnected aspects including tissues, organs, emotions, and even the times of day, all integrated into both TCM and Taoist thought. This holistic approach provides a practical and grounded understanding of how our bodies interact with the world around us.

What Are the Five Elements?

Before we dive in, I want to share that the Five Elements in Taoist philosophy differ from those in Indian or Ayurvedic systems.

Where Indian systems include elements like air and ether, Chinese medicine instead has wood and metal. Their philosophies also have different goals: Indian yoga often aims to transcend the body and unite with the divine, while Daoism focuses on maintaining the health and harmony of the body through alignment with nature.

 

Fire

Let’s start with Fire, the most yang element.

  • Color: Red
  • Season: Summer
  • Climate: Heat
  • Internal Organs: Heart and Small Intestine (Yin-Yang pairs), Pericardium and Sanjiao (Yin-Yang pairs)
  • Active Times: Heart (11 am – 1 pm), Small Intestine (1 pm – 3 pm), Pericardium (7 pm – 9 pm), Sanjiao (9 pm – 11 pm)
  • Direction: South
  • Emotion: Joy
  • Stage of Development: Growth
  • Energy Quality: Expansive
  • Virtue: Righteousness
  • Sound: Laughing

Earth

I view Earth as the center, not just another element in a circle.

  • Color: Yellow
  • Season: Transition periods between seasons (18 days before each new season)
  • Climate: Damp
  • Internal Organs: Stomach (7 am – 9 am) and Spleen (9 am – 11 am)
  • Direction: Center
  • Emotion: Empathy, Compassion
  • Stage of Development: Transformation
  • Energy Quality: Stabilizing
  • Virtue: Faith
  • Sound: Singing

Metal

Metal signifies new Yin, marking the beginning of autumn.

  • Color: White
  • Season: Fall
  • Climate: Dry
  • Internal Organs: Lungs (3 am – 5 am) and Large Intestine (5 am – 7 am)
  • Direction: West
  • Emotion: Sadness or Grief
  • Stage of Development: Harvest
  • Energy Quality: Contracting
  • Virtue: Prosperity
  • Sound: Crying

Water

Water is the element of full Yin, encompassing winter.

  • Color: Dark Blue or Black
  • Season: Winter
  • Climate: Cold
  • Internal Organs: Kidneys (5 pm – 7 pm) and Bladder (3 pm – 5 pm)
  • Direction: North
  • Emotion: Fear
  • Stage of Development: Storing
  • Energy Quality: Conserving
  • Virtue: Courage
  • Sound: Groaning

Wood

Wood represents new Yang, symbolizing spring and new growth.

  • Color: Green
  • Season: Spring
  • Climate: Windy
  • Internal Organs: Liver (1 am – 3 am) and Gallbladder (11 pm – 1 am)
  • Direction: East
  • Emotion: Anger or Frustration
  • Stage of Development: Birth
  • Energy Quality: Generative

Caution for Yoga Teachers

Yoga teachers, please don’t rush to host a workshop based on this basic overview. Accurate application of this knowledge requires a deeper understanding beyond this introduction. Misinterpretation can lead to misinformation, confusing your students and leading to pseudo-diagnosis.
