The Genesis of Yin Yoga Pose Names
Would a Yin Yoga Pose by any other name feel as sweet?
When my teacher, Paul Grilley, began codifying Yin Yoga, it was at a time of a sea of rigid alignment rules.
His innovative decision to rename poses allowed for a break from these conventions, facilitating a deeper understanding of individuality in poses—a profound influence on the Yoga world that remains today.
Navigating the Name Game
Within the yin community, you’ll find a variety of names for the same pose. During the evolution of Paul Grilley’s teachings, certain poses were renamed or consolidated under postural archetypes, creating more streamlined instructions while accommodating anatomical differences.
This reshaping hasn’t been without confusion. But it’s important to embrace this flexibility in names, mirroring our acceptance of human skeletal variation—a long-held principle in Paul Grilley’s teachings.
Practical Advice for Teachers and Students
For new Yin teachers, this myriad of names can seem daunting, but it’s important to maintain an open mind and embrace the nuances of each student’s practice. Remember, whether we call it “diamond” or a variant of “butterfly,” the essence of Yin Yoga remains the same—attention, adaptation, agency, and acceptance.
The Yin Approach to Life
Let’s take our practice off the mat and into daily life. Be it a different political viewpoint or lifestyle choice, approaching differences with the flexibility we preach on the mat enriches not only our Yoga practice but also our interactions with the world at large.
So I would argue that a Yin pose by any other name indeed feels just as sweet.
Let’s embrace the diversity and remember that the names are mere guides to a deeper, personal practice.

00:00:01.520 –> 00:00:05.670
Nyk Danu Yoga: Hi Yinies, and welcome back to a yin Yoga Podcast
2
00:00:06.610 –> 00:00:12.260
Nyk Danu Yoga: welcome back to those of you that are familiars and welcome welcome to those of you that are brand new around these parts.
3
00:00:12.993 –> 00:00:14.960
Nyk Danu Yoga: Couple of things to mention.
4
00:00:15.210 –> 00:00:17.260
Nyk Danu Yoga: So today, we’re going to talk about
5
00:00:17.700 –> 00:00:23.490
Nyk Danu Yoga: Yin Yoga poses and why they have different names than other styles of Yoga
6
00:00:23.710 –> 00:00:29.160
Nyk Danu Yoga: going to get into that in a moment. But before we do, a couple of disclaimers disclaimer number one.
7
00:00:29.500 –> 00:00:41.370
Nyk Danu Yoga: some of. You may know if you, the regular listener that recently I got kittens. And here, for those of you watching on Youtube, is one of them. This is Padme. She really likes to help me podcast
8
00:00:41.813 –> 00:00:52.470
Nyk Danu Yoga: and by help I mean sometimes lay on my lap. But usually there’s plenty of circling around me, wrestling and biting my knees and feet before she lays on the blanket on my lap.
9
00:00:52.640 –> 00:01:01.960
Nyk Danu Yoga: And that’s the phase we’re in right now. So if you are watching this. And you see me flinching or moving around or scooping up kittens. It’s because
10
00:01:02.260 –> 00:01:09.050
Nyk Danu Yoga: the other one does no interest in my podcasting. But this little one. She really likes to be on my lap
11
00:01:09.230 –> 00:01:12.309
Nyk Danu Yoga: whenever I’m here, whether it’s a zoom class or
12
00:01:13.270 –> 00:01:17.079
Nyk Danu Yoga: podcasting, she likes to. She likes to be included.
13
00:01:17.190 –> 00:01:20.519
Nyk Danu Yoga: So she’s around. Her name is Padme, which means Lotus
14
00:01:21.070 –> 00:01:25.909
Nyk Danu Yoga: and for those of you that are just listening. She’s a little black kitten.
15
00:01:26.010 –> 00:01:30.629
Nyk Danu Yoga: and she was the runt of the litter. So she’s quite fine boned and tiny, and she’s cute as
16
00:01:31.450 –> 00:01:32.340
Nyk Danu Yoga: Af.
17
00:01:33.280 –> 00:01:36.959
Nyk Danu Yoga: And yeah happy to be interrupted by her.
18
00:01:38.750 –> 00:01:41.509
Nyk Danu Yoga: So if you’re watching on Youtube, you may see some
19
00:01:41.690 –> 00:01:54.259
Nyk Danu Yoga: cute interruptions, or just me wincing or moving, as some little creator creature is biting me or attacking me, or you know, not settling into her blanket lap
20
00:01:54.740 –> 00:01:56.300
Nyk Danu Yoga: as quickly as I would like.
21
00:01:57.060 –> 00:02:00.979
Nyk Danu Yoga: So that’s disclaimer number one. Stay tuned for kitten cameos
22
00:02:01.723 –> 00:02:15.519
Nyk Danu Yoga: disclaimer number 2 is that this is an adult podcast with adult subject matter and adult languages. So if you have small people around, now is your chance to pause this and go grab some headphones
23
00:02:15.690 –> 00:02:22.439
Nyk Danu Yoga: because I have the soul of a mermaid, but the mouth of a sailor. So it’s possible that swear words will come up
24
00:02:23.542 –> 00:02:35.169
Nyk Danu Yoga: so just know that. And today’s a solo episode, so probably won’t be any. You know, guests speaking on the episode. But sometimes, you know, we have subject matter that is not for small ears.
25
00:02:35.760 –> 00:02:39.969
Nyk Danu Yoga: so take a moment to grab headphones if you have little ones around.
26
00:02:40.190 –> 00:02:44.980
Nyk Danu Yoga: and then, before we dive in, I just want to read a little podcast love that I got.
27
00:02:48.060 –> 00:02:52.290
Nyk Danu Yoga: This is by Dolly Chippett.
28
00:02:52.680 –> 00:02:55.519
Nyk Danu Yoga: I’ve recently discovered your podcasts nick
29
00:02:55.740 –> 00:03:00.900
Nyk Danu Yoga: loving them so far, I really liked the restorative versus yin episode.
30
00:03:01.340 –> 00:03:05.869
Nyk Danu Yoga: even as someone trained in both. There’s a misconception with the props
31
00:03:06.130 –> 00:03:10.149
Nyk Danu Yoga: guilty as charged in brackets. Thank you for clarifying.
32
00:03:10.590 –> 00:03:13.630
Nyk Danu Yoga: I will check out this episode in the post soon.
33
00:03:13.920 –> 00:03:18.340
Nyk Danu Yoga: So thank you, Dolly, and if you have not heard that episode.
34
00:03:19.287 –> 00:03:27.899
Nyk Danu Yoga: it’s yin versus restorative, because there is a big difference, despite the fact that they’re both still quiet and use props. And I did a whole episode on that.
35
00:03:28.470 –> 00:03:33.209
Nyk Danu Yoga: On that note, dear listener. I may mention other episodes in this episode.
36
00:03:33.450 –> 00:04:00.050
Nyk Danu Yoga: and if you haven’t listened to all the episodes yet, because you’re new around here in the show notes on whatever app you’re listening to. There’s going to be a document that says, see all episodes at a glance or something like that. That’s just a Google Doc, and it tells you each season the name of the episode, and then a link to where you can listen to it. So if I’m going on and on talking about other episodes, please know you can access all of those
37
00:04:00.160 –> 00:04:01.440
Nyk Danu Yoga: from that document.
38
00:04:01.560 –> 00:04:11.799
Nyk Danu Yoga: I started off doing that document mostly for my own sanity. So that when I wanted to link episodes for people, I had them all kind of in one place. And then I thought.
39
00:04:11.940 –> 00:04:27.240
Nyk Danu Yoga: Wait a minute. You can share a Google Doc, why not just make this publicly available so that anybody who wants to go searching through and check out topics and things like that can check them out. So just know that that is there for you, and it’s a link in the show notes.
40
00:04:28.460 –> 00:04:30.490
Nyk Danu Yoga: And then the final thing I’ll say.
41
00:04:32.670 –> 00:04:39.739
Nyk Danu Yoga: is, dear, Yoga, teacher, if you have been around here for a while and you’ve been listening. And you’ve been getting a lot
42
00:04:39.850 –> 00:04:55.050
Nyk Danu Yoga: out of these podcasts. Please take a moment to do one or all of the following things, make sure you have followed or subscribed to the podcast on whatever app or if you’re on Youtube subscribe to the Channel.
43
00:04:55.210 –> 00:05:04.550
Nyk Danu Yoga: this really helps me because you won’t ever miss an episode. And it also helps you because you won’t miss an episode. So please take a moment to do that. Now, if you have not already
44
00:05:05.551 –> 00:05:08.149
Nyk Danu Yoga: and then, if you’ve already done that.
45
00:05:08.440 –> 00:05:14.549
Nyk Danu Yoga: would you consider for those of you who’ve been coming back week after week, offering me a review or rating
46
00:05:14.750 –> 00:05:17.689
Nyk Danu Yoga: so in apple and spotify. You can do stars.
47
00:05:17.880 –> 00:05:24.750
Nyk Danu Yoga: So if you want to drop me a 5 star rating. I would be super grateful for those of you who are big fans of the pod.
48
00:05:25.203 –> 00:05:36.869
Nyk Danu Yoga: And in apple you can also leave reviews that are written. So if you wanted to do that, that would be swell, too. Now I should mention that I don’t see all of them
49
00:05:37.310 –> 00:05:46.919
Nyk Danu Yoga: in my app. I have to actually go. So for some reason, Apple only shows you like. I only see ones, I think, from the Us. And Canada
50
00:05:47.250 –> 00:06:00.300
Nyk Danu Yoga: in my app. I don’t know why, so I have to kind of click like a separate page to go find the other ones. So if I don’t read yours right away, don’t worry, I’ll find it, and I’ll get to reading it on the show.
51
00:06:00.550 –> 00:06:04.179
Nyk Danu Yoga: But it just may be hiding in the other countries. Pile
52
00:06:04.841 –> 00:06:07.860
Nyk Danu Yoga: so you could leave me a reading or a review
53
00:06:08.330 –> 00:06:33.600
Nyk Danu Yoga: also on spotify. Now you can leave comments under an episode which is a great way to leave me some feedback. And on Youtube, of course, you could drop down below after you’ve subscribed and liked the video and leave me a comment there about the podcast, I would be super grateful. You can let me know what you thought of an episode, or how you’re enjoying the podcast or if you have a topic idea. So if there’s a yin Yoga
54
00:06:33.800 –> 00:06:38.650
Nyk Danu Yoga: question or topic that you are struggling with, and you would like an episode on it.
55
00:06:38.760 –> 00:06:44.810
Nyk Danu Yoga: please. By all means let me know. Now to be clear. I’m not asking for guest recommendations.
56
00:06:45.020 –> 00:07:12.979
Nyk Danu Yoga: I mean, you can try that, too. Just may not be very fruitful. So far the podcast is invitation only. So, if there’s a topic that I do not feel qualified to speak on, I look for a guest to speak on it. So by all means, if you know somebody who is an expert in their area of what affects a yin practice, and you want to let me know. Please do. But I’m not just at the point where I’m just randomly interviewing yin Yoga
57
00:07:13.100 –> 00:07:17.410
Nyk Danu Yoga: teachers because I want to keep this educational
58
00:07:18.216 –> 00:07:22.520
Nyk Danu Yoga: as opposed to just yoga teachers sitting around chatting, although there’s plenty of that, too.
59
00:07:23.240 –> 00:07:29.349
Nyk Danu Yoga: Okay, all of that preamble. Let’s get into today’s topic.
60
00:07:29.470 –> 00:07:34.479
Nyk Danu Yoga: So, my friends, I have a question for you.
61
00:07:35.330 –> 00:07:38.760
Nyk Danu Yoga: and those of you who are not Shakespeare fans will miss the pun. But that’s okay.
62
00:07:40.490 –> 00:07:43.900
Nyk Danu Yoga: Would oppose by any other name, not feel as sweet?
63
00:07:44.620 –> 00:07:48.709
Nyk Danu Yoga: Would a yin yoga pose by any other name not feel as sweet.
64
00:07:49.310 –> 00:07:56.220
Nyk Danu Yoga: So for those of you that are missing it. It’s sort of a spoof on Romeo and Juliet, or would arose by any other name anyways.
65
00:07:57.930 –> 00:08:00.810
Nyk Danu Yoga: I wanted to talk about this because.
66
00:08:01.020 –> 00:08:14.700
Nyk Danu Yoga: 1st of all, if you’ve been around yin circles and you’re kind of new to yin, you might be like. Wait a minute. I learned the name of that pose in half a yoga as blank. But now y’all are calling it this. Huh?
67
00:08:14.880 –> 00:08:16.459
Nyk Danu Yoga: So there’s that aspect.
68
00:08:16.700 –> 00:08:23.989
Nyk Danu Yoga: And then there’s the aspect of different yin teachers having slightly different or very different names for poses.
69
00:08:24.500 –> 00:08:30.610
Nyk Danu Yoga: So let’s get into that, shall we? Why do we have all these poses with different names?
70
00:08:31.180 –> 00:08:36.920
Nyk Danu Yoga: So 1st I’m just going to share, based on what my teacher, Paul Grilly, has told me.
71
00:08:37.687 –> 00:08:41.619
Nyk Danu Yoga: And that is that when he started kind of codifying yin.
72
00:08:41.950 –> 00:08:44.469
Nyk Danu Yoga: So Paul Grelly didn’t create yin
73
00:08:44.580 –> 00:08:47.939
Nyk Danu Yoga: right like Yin already existed in the world.
74
00:08:48.050 –> 00:09:03.179
Nyk Danu Yoga: In fact, he learned what we would call these yin poses, or the way of doing yoga in a yin way from Polyzinc. But what he did do is he kind of codified it, and put a structure to it, and started teaching it regularly.
75
00:09:03.500 –> 00:09:12.549
Nyk Danu Yoga: and then became known, as you know, sort of Mr. Yin Yoga wrote a book. Put out some Dvds. Some courses trained, some teachers, you know small stuff.
76
00:09:13.130 –> 00:09:22.000
Nyk Danu Yoga: anyway. When I was 1st studying with Paul, one of the things that he mentioned was that in the in the time of I would guess, you say.
77
00:09:22.530 –> 00:09:26.520
Nyk Danu Yoga: probably even late 80 s. To maybe mid 90 s.
78
00:09:26.700 –> 00:09:29.400
Nyk Danu Yoga: There was a lot of alignment
79
00:09:29.700 –> 00:09:33.450
Nyk Danu Yoga: policing in the in, you know, in the Yoga verse.
80
00:09:35.170 –> 00:09:41.931
Nyk Danu Yoga: So in the time, I would say of maybe the late eighties to mid nineties, there was a lot of
81
00:09:42.530 –> 00:09:44.290
Nyk Danu Yoga: alignment policing.
82
00:09:44.410 –> 00:09:59.450
Nyk Danu Yoga: meaning. There was a lot of rules just out there in the Yoga, verse, in classes, in trainings, in articles about the alignment or the air, quotes right way to do a pose versus the wrong way to do a pose.
83
00:09:59.980 –> 00:10:08.750
Nyk Danu Yoga: And usually these alignment rules came out under the guise of you know, keeping people air quotes safe
84
00:10:09.580 –> 00:10:24.220
Nyk Danu Yoga: now, many, many years later. There are still many people that are teaching in this way. Unfortunately, that, like there’s 1 air quotes safe way to do a pose, or one air quotes right way to do a pose.
85
00:10:24.830 –> 00:10:26.940
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I did. Another episode.
86
00:10:28.680 –> 00:10:35.920
Nyk Danu Yoga: on alignment called. You will not be assimilated. Most people didn’t get that joke. It’s a Star Trek reference.
87
00:10:36.160 –> 00:10:44.889
Nyk Danu Yoga: by the way, for those of you who are not nerds and didn’t get it so you could check that one out for more on sort of skeletal variation.
88
00:10:45.000 –> 00:10:51.029
Nyk Danu Yoga: And why this idea that there’s 1 size fits all or one way to do a pose just actually isn’t accurate
89
00:10:51.170 –> 00:11:02.609
Nyk Danu Yoga: or wise, or skillful. And so, as teachers, we need to be aware of that. And if you haven’t studied the work of my teacher, Paul Grilly. He has a fantastic presentation. It is linked in the show notes
90
00:11:02.999 –> 00:11:09.709
Nyk Danu Yoga: called anatomy for yoga. It’s not specific to yin. It’s for all yoga. So you don’t even have to be a yin teacher to
91
00:11:10.125 –> 00:11:20.749
Nyk Danu Yoga: to learn from that, but I highly recommend buying it when I owned it, and still own it. It was on DVD. I also have the streaming version. But it is streaming now, so you can go ahead and
92
00:11:20.910 –> 00:11:21.830
Nyk Danu Yoga: use that
93
00:11:22.879 –> 00:11:31.859
Nyk Danu Yoga: and you’ll get a lot of really like good Aha! Moments on like, Whoa, okay, there’s this much variation in humans. I had no idea.
94
00:11:32.180 –> 00:11:35.240
Nyk Danu Yoga: So sometimes I think we get this idea because we.
95
00:11:35.370 –> 00:11:41.919
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know, we have an anatomy textbook, or we’re in our Yin training or massage training, or whatever it is. If you happen to be
96
00:11:43.360 –> 00:11:56.130
Nyk Danu Yoga: qualified in other disciplines, and we have the sort of plastic skeleton in the teaching room. And so we sort of get this idea that like. That’s what everybody looks like inside that. We’re all same. Same. Z, but that’s not true.
97
00:11:57.730 –> 00:12:09.520
Nyk Danu Yoga: So it’s interesting to think that we all can look at each other. We could all be in a room together right now if we were all together in one place, and we could definitely look at each other and see clear differences. Physically.
98
00:12:09.910 –> 00:12:21.880
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know. Height, weight, skin, tone, eye, color, body, proportions, etc. I mean, there could be so much more, etc, etc, and yet we think somehow on the inside
99
00:12:22.200 –> 00:12:23.260
Nyk Danu Yoga: we’re all the same.
100
00:12:23.370 –> 00:12:26.429
Nyk Danu Yoga: Our hip joints are all the same. Our shoulder joints are all the same.
101
00:12:26.840 –> 00:12:29.140
Nyk Danu Yoga: Nay, nay, I say that is not true.
102
00:12:29.270 –> 00:12:30.400
Nyk Danu Yoga: And so
103
00:12:30.630 –> 00:12:38.519
Nyk Danu Yoga: this was the sort. The reason I’m going into this so much is that this is the ocean that Paul was swimming in
104
00:12:38.650 –> 00:12:51.029
Nyk Danu Yoga: when he 1st started, really traveling around and making Yin Yoga popular, and when he started teaching it regularly he was swimming around in this alignment.
105
00:12:51.170 –> 00:12:59.960
Nyk Danu Yoga: Police air quotes right way to do oppose culture, and, believe me, it was thick.
106
00:13:00.350 –> 00:13:06.139
Nyk Danu Yoga: this culture I was around in it. I was actually originally trained in a style that was like alignment obsessed.
107
00:13:06.300 –> 00:13:10.340
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I can tell you that at the time this was
108
00:13:10.960 –> 00:13:18.090
Nyk Danu Yoga: for those of you that are newer teachers, and you’ve had more flexibility with your alignment. The alignment policing was strong.
109
00:13:18.310 –> 00:13:24.360
Nyk Danu Yoga: and there was all kinds of messages out there about the right and the wrong ways to do poses, and
110
00:13:24.460 –> 00:13:46.880
Nyk Danu Yoga: also, you know, in teacher trainings. And there was almost this feeling like, if you let if you let air quote your students go kind of out of the box of like the correct alignment that you would probably be injuring them right that they would, you would be causing them harm. So this is kind of the the waters we were swimming in at the time.
111
00:13:47.030 –> 00:13:56.159
Nyk Danu Yoga: One very clear example of that would be the cue that your knee should never go ahead of your ankle or foot in a lunge.
112
00:13:56.710 –> 00:13:59.079
Nyk Danu Yoga: Right? Some people are still teaching that.
113
00:13:59.948 –> 00:14:20.019
Nyk Danu Yoga: That that’s dangerous. That’s bad, somehow, for your knee. Now, maybe if you have a pretty strong knee injury, and maybe shouldn’t even be in a general class, because you should be in kind of like a therapeutic class, or rehabbing with a Pt. Then maybe that might be accurate. Maybe you know, for your particular knee that might not be the most stable position.
114
00:14:20.340 –> 00:14:22.270
Nyk Danu Yoga: but for people with healthy knees.
115
00:14:22.870 –> 00:14:40.029
Nyk Danu Yoga: Tell me if you actually believe this, how do you go up the stairs? If you don’t ever let your knee, come ahead of your ankle or your toes, it would be impossible. Our knee joint is made to do that. So this is just one small example of the waters that we were swimming in.
116
00:14:40.400 –> 00:14:50.939
Nyk Danu Yoga: and, to be clear, not all of the air quotes right ways to do a pose were actually for safety. So, for example.
117
00:14:51.290 –> 00:14:57.150
Nyk Danu Yoga: a lot of people still teach that in what in yin we call swan or sleeping swan.
118
00:14:57.567 –> 00:15:08.819
Nyk Danu Yoga: You know, pigeon pose for your hips in other styles of Yoga. A lot of people are still teaching that your front shin should be parallel to the front of your mat, and that your front leg should be at 90 degrees.
119
00:15:09.560 –> 00:15:15.080
Nyk Danu Yoga: That that’s the air quotes right way to do the pose. That’s the air quotes goal of the pose.
120
00:15:15.410 –> 00:15:23.379
Nyk Danu Yoga: and that actually could be very injurious. So if you’re a teacher listening, and you have been queuing that, please stop
121
00:15:23.820 –> 00:15:46.310
Nyk Danu Yoga: not everybody’s hip joint will do that. And if your students think they’re not doing it right unless they do that, they will force themselves into a position that is not ideal for their hip joint and over time that can actually cause injury. So sometimes these so-called alignment cues were because we were trying to air quotes, keep people safe, and sometimes they’re just
122
00:15:46.350 –> 00:15:56.330
Nyk Danu Yoga: some random aesthetic cue that we saw somewhere in some Yoga book and then got passed down the teacher line. And so every teacher started saying them.
123
00:15:57.380 –> 00:16:05.180
Nyk Danu Yoga: Okay, so why am I giving you all this preample? Well, this is why, when Paul started teaching Yin.
124
00:16:05.550 –> 00:16:08.240
Nyk Danu Yoga: he changed the names of the poses
125
00:16:08.760 –> 00:16:28.889
Nyk Danu Yoga: so that somebody couldn’t say, Oh, well, you’re not doing. Let’s just use Swan again. You’re not doing Swan correctly or pigeon correctly, because the front leg should look like this, you know, it should be shin parallel to the front of the mat front leg at 90 degrees. That’s the correct way to do this pose.
126
00:16:30.000 –> 00:16:35.530
Nyk Danu Yoga: And so, as a way of just sort of leaving that drama behind.
127
00:16:35.640 –> 00:16:43.120
Nyk Danu Yoga: Paul just renamed the poses so he could just easily say, We’re not doing, pigeon. We’re doing, Swan.
128
00:16:44.450 –> 00:16:51.299
Nyk Danu Yoga: So that’s the story that I’ve been told by my teacher, Paul Grilly, about why these new names came out
129
00:16:51.800 –> 00:16:53.780
Nyk Danu Yoga: now, had he been
130
00:16:54.490 –> 00:17:02.789
Nyk Danu Yoga: in a different time. Maybe he wouldn’t have needed to rename all these poses. But then, again, I would say that Paul is largely responsible
131
00:17:02.970 –> 00:17:12.330
Nyk Danu Yoga: in a big way for the turn of these so-called alignment rules being let go because of his work in anatomy for Yoga
132
00:17:12.500 –> 00:17:17.749
Nyk Danu Yoga: and his bone pictures. And then all of the teachers he’s trained, and then the teachers that
133
00:17:17.890 –> 00:17:24.619
Nyk Danu Yoga: he’s trained, that have trained other teachers, and so on, and so on and so on. But I would say that in the Yoga verse
134
00:17:25.089 –> 00:17:43.530
Nyk Danu Yoga: we really owe a huge debt of gratitude to Paul Grilli to my teacher for making skeletal variation and anatomical differences more common knowledge, because back in the day, even when I was studying Yoga, this was not common knowledge.
135
00:17:44.020 –> 00:17:58.240
Nyk Danu Yoga: everybody was assumed to have the same shoulder joints, the same hip joints, etc. And so really you were only modifying. If someone had an injury or wasn’t flexible enough to get into a pose, then we would air, quote, modify the pose for them.
136
00:17:59.210 –> 00:18:09.349
Nyk Danu Yoga: But now no understanding skeletal variation. Truth be told, these aren’t necessarily modifications at all. It’s just each individual’s version of doing a pose.
137
00:18:09.780 –> 00:18:13.849
Nyk Danu Yoga: So this is why the new names came out.
138
00:18:14.930 –> 00:18:20.660
Nyk Danu Yoga: This is why Paul decided to rename Moses, now
139
00:18:21.140 –> 00:18:28.790
Nyk Danu Yoga: also worth pointing out that Paul himself has renamed poses even since he’s been teaching until now.
140
00:18:29.230 –> 00:18:40.550
Nyk Danu Yoga: And so even within the Yin community, you are going to find different names for different poses. So I’ll talk more about that in a moment. But I want to say that this isn’t unique to the Yin community.
141
00:18:40.870 –> 00:18:47.349
Nyk Danu Yoga: When I was teaching Hatha Yoga, which was Iyangar, influenced and alignment obsessed.
142
00:18:49.780 –> 00:18:56.639
Nyk Danu Yoga: We had names for poses that were slightly different than even in a tradition like the Aishtanga tradition.
143
00:18:57.790 –> 00:19:05.460
Nyk Danu Yoga: Kundalina Yoga has a pose that we would call downward dog, which I think they call pyramid, or something.
144
00:19:05.770 –> 00:19:07.240
Nyk Danu Yoga: or triangle. Maybe
145
00:19:07.350 –> 00:19:25.160
Nyk Danu Yoga: so, just to point out that even long before yin yoga before Paul started teaching Yin Yoga a lot and then getting well known for it, and then traveling around and renaming the poses long before all of that, and long before anatomy for Yoga that presentation
146
00:19:25.440 –> 00:19:35.100
Nyk Danu Yoga: there were still differences in different styles of Yoga, slightly or noticeably about what poses were called right. So this isn’t new.
147
00:19:35.560 –> 00:19:41.599
Nyk Danu Yoga: What is new is Paul deciding? Actually, I’m going to call this pose this instead.
148
00:19:41.990 –> 00:19:44.029
Nyk Danu Yoga: And again he did that so that
149
00:19:44.160 –> 00:19:50.509
Nyk Danu Yoga: people could let go of the stories they had in their head about how these poses should be done.
150
00:19:52.060 –> 00:19:57.320
Nyk Danu Yoga: So, even within though the years that I have been studying with Paul Grilley.
151
00:19:57.470 –> 00:20:05.660
Nyk Danu Yoga: Names have changed. So, for example, if you look at Paul’s 1st Yin DVD. Which some of you don’t even know
152
00:20:06.020 –> 00:20:07.970
Nyk Danu Yoga: that Paul has again. DVD.
153
00:20:08.706 –> 00:20:11.480
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s on the same site on Pranamaya.
154
00:20:11.760 –> 00:20:24.739
Nyk Danu Yoga: I highly recommend. If you are a fan of Yin, and you are a fan of Paul Grillley, and you don’t have it that you get that practice. And you do that practice was DVD. Of course it’s streaming now. Sarah Powers also has a practice on there which is lovely.
155
00:20:25.170 –> 00:20:29.860
Nyk Danu Yoga: Several actually, I think she’s got 2 or 3 and
156
00:20:31.390 –> 00:20:39.000
Nyk Danu Yoga: in that presentation. So in that class, or the classes that are on that. What was a DVD. With Paul Grillley?
157
00:20:39.180 –> 00:20:47.489
Nyk Danu Yoga: And if you compare that to some of the terminology he uses now for poses, there are different names.
158
00:20:47.840 –> 00:20:56.549
Nyk Danu Yoga: So, for example, there used to be a delineation between what he calls shoelace, which would have been in hatha gomikosen legs.
159
00:20:57.769 –> 00:21:01.630
Nyk Danu Yoga: and square pose, or sometimes called fire log pose.
160
00:21:02.130 –> 00:21:14.069
Nyk Danu Yoga: Those were kind of delineated as separate shapes, but now he’s sort of redone things in a way that like square is just a version of shoelace.
161
00:21:14.750 –> 00:21:27.069
Nyk Danu Yoga: Now this happened partway through Paul training teachers. In fact, I would say it was probably the last time that I studied with him, not last, as in the last time I will ever. But last, as in
162
00:21:27.250 –> 00:21:28.450
Nyk Danu Yoga: the most recent.
163
00:21:28.670 –> 00:21:38.840
Nyk Danu Yoga: was the 1st time that these archetypes and these new kind of names, for poses were actually kind of coming out in his teaching with us.
164
00:21:39.130 –> 00:21:40.450
Nyk Danu Yoga: Previous to that.
165
00:21:41.180 –> 00:21:50.029
Nyk Danu Yoga: there they were just separate poses. There was square, and there were shoelace, and one works for some people, and one works for others, and some people, both of them work
166
00:21:52.300 –> 00:21:57.450
Nyk Danu Yoga: There were other poses that he has since changed like there was a gecko
167
00:21:58.080 –> 00:22:07.310
Nyk Danu Yoga: in that presentation, and as well, or in that class as well. And so somewhere along the line, Paul decided that he wanted to simplify
168
00:22:07.640 –> 00:22:35.529
Nyk Danu Yoga: and have postural archetypes, which more of the poses that you know, that had individual names now fall under. Sort of an umbrella of an archetype. So this is still fairly recent, actually. And so this can be confusing, because if you are studying with one of Paul’s old school teachers raises her hand, who was around and practicing with him before these archetypes and before a whole bunch of poses got slotted into these archetypes.
169
00:22:35.620 –> 00:22:42.290
Nyk Danu Yoga: we may still be using separate names for things like square to me separate than shoelace
170
00:22:42.500 –> 00:22:53.849
Nyk Danu Yoga: probably always will be that deer pose is separate from swan pose, and so I may have more names for poses than what
171
00:22:54.050 –> 00:23:05.040
Nyk Danu Yoga: Paul does currently, because he has changed the way that he’s teaching these to simplify it. And I actually value having that delineation.
172
00:23:05.520 –> 00:23:08.420
Nyk Danu Yoga: And so even that could be confusing.
173
00:23:09.660 –> 00:23:11.510
Nyk Danu Yoga: And then you add to it.
174
00:23:11.890 –> 00:23:16.610
Nyk Danu Yoga: You know all the upper body stuff which Paul did not teach us.
175
00:23:16.730 –> 00:23:32.299
Nyk Danu Yoga: Nay, nay, I say, those of us that were senior teachers, and were studying with Paul, were, you know, noticing many of us around the world, all at the same time sort of like a collective investigation, despite the fact that some people like to say they were. The air quotes
176
00:23:32.550 –> 00:23:57.609
Nyk Danu Yoga: 1st person to do upper body poses which always makes me laugh because it’s like, How would you know that like, do you actually know all of Paul’s students around the world and know what they were doing at home in their practice when they weren’t in training. No, you do not. Do you know what they were teaching their students. No, see, there’s no way you could say you were the 1st one to include upper body poses, but a rant for another time, perhaps.
177
00:23:58.286 –> 00:24:01.749
Nyk Danu Yoga: But many of us were experimenting with upper body stuff.
178
00:24:01.930 –> 00:24:13.690
Nyk Danu Yoga: and then, of course, Paul didn’t tell us what the names of these were, so we were either using names from things we had learned in other traditions, or that just made sense to us like broken wing, for example.
179
00:24:15.660 –> 00:24:40.189
Nyk Danu Yoga: And so you can even notice a difference from one teacher to another with exactly the same pose. Here’s a perfect example. Bernie is the only person I know, and Bernie trained people or people who’ve read Bernie’s books, who uses banana Asana like. I never heard of banana Asana ever, except for Bernie. And then, of course, people Bernie has trained and who have read his book.
180
00:24:40.360 –> 00:24:44.249
Nyk Danu Yoga: I learned that pose as crescent pose as in Crescent Moon.
181
00:24:45.300 –> 00:24:52.160
Nyk Danu Yoga: That’s just one example. Also, Bernie calls what Paul would call dragonfly straddle pose.
182
00:24:53.070 –> 00:25:06.659
Nyk Danu Yoga: So again, you know, Bernie is free, to use his own words, for the poses. But Straddle was not a hand-me-down from Paul, as far as I know, because Paul’s always called that dragonfly.
183
00:25:06.940 –> 00:25:14.639
Nyk Danu Yoga: So within yin communities, within yin circles, within yin teachers there will be different names
184
00:25:14.780 –> 00:25:37.770
Nyk Danu Yoga: for the same thing. This is why, sometimes, when we’re Indian groups and you know, we’re kind of talking about poses. It’s helpful to just throw up a picture, because what one person might call broken wings somebody else is calling crushed branches. Somebody else is calling. I don’t know. I can’t even think of what they might be. And so there’s so many different names. So
185
00:25:38.440 –> 00:25:39.829
Nyk Danu Yoga: just use a picture.
186
00:25:40.640 –> 00:26:03.020
Nyk Danu Yoga: So just know that if you were the type of person who gets rigidly attached to things being right and wrong, you are going to struggle as a yin teacher or a yin practitioner because there is no right and wrong, and there’s a lot of that’s interesting, or Oh, that depends, or Oh, I call this blah blah blah, or I learned this pose as blah blah.
187
00:26:03.760 –> 00:26:12.460
Nyk Danu Yoga: So a rose by any other name, though, will still smell as sweet. So whether I call it pigeon
188
00:26:12.670 –> 00:26:17.249
Nyk Danu Yoga: or sleeping swan, I’m still gonna stretch my hip butt it band zone.
189
00:26:17.540 –> 00:26:18.630
Nyk Danu Yoga: So
190
00:26:19.170 –> 00:26:42.330
Nyk Danu Yoga: kind of a moot point, really, at this point, and it can be a little confusing to new teachers to yen, because, you know, they in their active classes. They’re calling this thing Pigeon, or they’re calling us a low lunge, and now they’re calling it Dragon and Yin, or Sleeping swan in yin, and like that can get a little confusing or shoelace now instead of Goma Cosin, or you know, it can get confusing. But
191
00:26:42.800 –> 00:26:50.569
Nyk Danu Yoga: I was trained in a style where we had to learn the English and the Sanskrit for each pose, so I’ve always had at least 2 names for each pose in my mind anyways.
192
00:26:52.730 –> 00:27:00.020
Nyk Danu Yoga: and what I would love to encourage us to do as a community as Yin Yoga teachers and practitioners
193
00:27:00.500 –> 00:27:06.650
Nyk Danu Yoga: is to not be so obsessed with things being air quotes right?
194
00:27:07.420 –> 00:27:13.960
Nyk Danu Yoga: So if you really understand Yin Yang theory, and I’ve done a whole episode on that, too. Back in season one.
195
00:27:14.120 –> 00:27:15.590
Nyk Danu Yoga: I did a version of
196
00:27:15.790 –> 00:27:19.899
Nyk Danu Yoga: you know a bridge version of Yin Yang theory for those of you that are new to that
197
00:27:21.690 –> 00:27:23.650
Nyk Danu Yoga: there are no absolutes.
198
00:27:23.930 –> 00:27:35.920
Nyk Danu Yoga: right? So there is nothing that’s 100% yin, 100% yang, just like there is nothing that is 100 right or 100% wrong. In this practice everything is a it depends
199
00:27:36.710 –> 00:27:49.800
Nyk Danu Yoga: so rather than getting our knickers in a knot about whether or not somebody is doing a pose. Air quotes correctly, alignment wise, which you just need to toss that out right now, if you’re going to teach in.
200
00:27:50.440 –> 00:27:55.834
Nyk Danu Yoga: or whether we’re getting our knickers in a knot, because what you call
201
00:27:56.370 –> 00:28:01.160
Nyk Danu Yoga: butterfly I call diamond pose, which was one that came up
202
00:28:01.510 –> 00:28:06.350
Nyk Danu Yoga: to me diamond pose just look like butterfly with your feet further away.
203
00:28:06.450 –> 00:28:14.309
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I would have been in the Paul Grilly camp with that one, and just been like, why would you make a whole brand new name for that when all you did was slide the feet further away.
204
00:28:14.760 –> 00:28:18.930
Nyk Danu Yoga: Wouldn’t you just call it a variation of butterfly?
205
00:28:20.151 –> 00:28:33.729
Nyk Danu Yoga: I recently heard somebody else refer to half butterfly, which in Hatha would be Janushasan. So you know, one leg straight, one leg bent, coming out to the side, folding over your leg.
206
00:28:34.495 –> 00:28:39.020
Nyk Danu Yoga: I recently heard somebody calling that cocoon pose
207
00:28:39.970 –> 00:28:57.070
Nyk Danu Yoga: which kind of makes sense. If you think about butterfly being both legs bent and caterpillar being both legs straight, that that kind of, you know. It’s kind of a nice visual, actually cocoon pose. I’m still going to call it half butterfly, because that’s how I learned it, and it’s already ingrained that way. But
208
00:28:57.410 –> 00:29:02.729
Nyk Danu Yoga: would I get all up in arms about some other Yoga teacher calling that pose cocoon?
209
00:29:02.950 –> 00:29:05.030
Nyk Danu Yoga: Nope, I certainly wouldn’t.
210
00:29:07.280 –> 00:29:08.919
Nyk Danu Yoga: Here’s another example
211
00:29:09.780 –> 00:29:27.679
Nyk Danu Yoga: when I teach essentially a low lunge or dragon, but flipped on their on someone’s back because they cannot kneel. So imagine someone laying on their back with a bolster under their pelvis, and they’re hugging the right knee in and extending their left leg out straight. So it’s essentially an upside down
212
00:29:27.870 –> 00:29:34.609
Nyk Danu Yoga: low lunge or dragon, with a bolster, or block or blanket underneath the hips, to kind of access that
213
00:29:34.820 –> 00:29:39.300
Nyk Danu Yoga: same hip flexor. Stretch a bit more so
214
00:29:39.540 –> 00:29:48.859
Nyk Danu Yoga: I will teach that often with people, and I will give them the choice to either extend both legs out straight, which Paul and Susie call pontoon.
215
00:29:49.520 –> 00:29:58.359
Nyk Danu Yoga: or to hug one knee in and extend the other leg out straight, and then that would beg to be like, well, wait a minute if both legs straight. Is pontoon.
216
00:29:58.540 –> 00:30:00.340
Nyk Danu Yoga: Is this half pontoon?
217
00:30:00.510 –> 00:30:04.020
Nyk Danu Yoga: Or since you’re actually using this as a lunge
218
00:30:04.574 –> 00:30:07.330
Nyk Danu Yoga: to replace a lunge for anyone who can’t
219
00:30:07.500 –> 00:30:30.709
Nyk Danu Yoga: kneel were to replace dragon. Then wouldn’t this just be some people call it? Some of my colleagues call it lazy dragons. I’ve heard Sleeping Dragon, I call it Baby Dragon Tomato tomato. See right there, lazy dragon, sleepy dragon, baby dragon. It’s all the same thing. It’s all the same pose, and it’s a great variation for people who can’t kneel and do dragon.
220
00:30:31.050 –> 00:30:41.569
Nyk Danu Yoga: So then I could throw more monkey wrenches into that and be like, well, should I actually be calling that half pontoon and pontoon is a kind of a bridge for those of you who like me didn’t know what that meant until
221
00:30:41.680 –> 00:30:42.800
Nyk Danu Yoga: they looked it up.
222
00:30:44.900 –> 00:30:51.529
Nyk Danu Yoga: Should I be calling it that, or should I just be calling it Baby Dragon, or Lazy Dragon, or Sleepy Dragon?
223
00:30:51.700 –> 00:30:53.040
Nyk Danu Yoga: Recline, dragon.
224
00:30:54.200 –> 00:30:58.260
Nyk Danu Yoga: The point is, it doesn’t fucking matter what you call it.
225
00:30:58.710 –> 00:31:01.539
Nyk Danu Yoga: As long as your students can get into the shape.
226
00:31:02.260 –> 00:31:06.699
Nyk Danu Yoga: feel comfortable enough that they can feel sensation in the intended area.
227
00:31:07.380 –> 00:31:14.370
Nyk Danu Yoga: And they’re doing that, and they’re able to sustain that comfortably. And by I should use air quotes around comfortably.
228
00:31:14.810 –> 00:31:22.940
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s not probably very comfortable, but if they’re able to maintain holding the pose for the duration of time in a variation that works for their body.
229
00:31:23.510 –> 00:31:25.670
Nyk Danu Yoga: and they’re able to feel sensation there.
230
00:31:26.730 –> 00:31:30.959
Nyk Danu Yoga: Then what does it matter what the hell the pose is called.
231
00:31:31.850 –> 00:31:34.420
Nyk Danu Yoga: So I think we really have to
232
00:31:35.090 –> 00:31:42.989
Nyk Danu Yoga: as Yoga people, whether you’re a teacher, especially if you’re a teacher, but also for those of you that are dedicated practitioners.
233
00:31:43.270 –> 00:31:48.499
Nyk Danu Yoga: We have to take a moment when we notice that we’re being sort of our buttons are being pushed
234
00:31:48.850 –> 00:32:01.890
Nyk Danu Yoga: by things in the Yoga world so that we want to get into a comment thread and start. You know, a little war on a Facebook group over the name of butterfly versus diamond pose.
235
00:32:03.430 –> 00:32:09.339
Nyk Danu Yoga: If that’s happening, take a moment and pause because you’re kind of missing the bigger picture of yoga.
236
00:32:09.570 –> 00:32:15.129
Nyk Danu Yoga: Right? I mean, I’m hoping you didn’t just do yoga to become more flexible in your hamstrings
237
00:32:15.510 –> 00:32:20.050
Nyk Danu Yoga: like, can we not be mentally and emotionally flexible here as well?
238
00:32:20.560 –> 00:32:21.540
Nyk Danu Yoga: And
239
00:32:21.760 –> 00:32:39.000
Nyk Danu Yoga: one of the greatest gifts of a yin practice is the ability to experience that sort of witnessing consciousness where we’re able to notice. Oh, I’m feeling sensation in my body, and my mind is telling me stories about that, and I can sit with that. And I can actually stay here. And I can just observe that.
240
00:32:39.190 –> 00:32:41.849
Nyk Danu Yoga: Can we not do that in the rest of our lives, too
241
00:32:42.080 –> 00:32:45.190
Nyk Danu Yoga: like? Can we not take our yoga off the fucking mat, please?
242
00:32:45.340 –> 00:32:47.940
Nyk Danu Yoga: So if you find yourself in a Facebook group.
243
00:32:48.320 –> 00:32:58.360
Nyk Danu Yoga: You know keyboard warrioring about whether or not this pose is called this or that, and being super attached to the name of the pose that you have learned from your teacher
244
00:32:58.950 –> 00:33:01.939
Nyk Danu Yoga: would say, it’s time to sit down
245
00:33:02.290 –> 00:33:09.700
Nyk Danu Yoga: and remember to meditate a little while, because you are not observing your mind, you are attached
246
00:33:09.810 –> 00:33:24.329
Nyk Danu Yoga: to a name based on what somebody else told you, which isn’t even necessarily your own experience. So there’s a problem there, too. So let’s you know, use our critical thinking to go. Oh, okay, well, my teacher called it this, that person’s teacher called it that.
247
00:33:25.050 –> 00:33:29.949
Nyk Danu Yoga: I’m gonna stick with my name, or maybe I like theirs better, and I’m gonna use their name.
248
00:33:30.560 –> 00:33:31.560
Nyk Danu Yoga: Who knows?
249
00:33:32.320 –> 00:33:38.270
Nyk Danu Yoga: But can we observe when this tendency starts to come up as a human.
250
00:33:39.420 –> 00:33:45.190
Nyk Danu Yoga: And then, when we can observe this in our Yoga practice, then we can observe it in the rest of our life.
251
00:33:45.450 –> 00:33:50.329
Nyk Danu Yoga: and we can use our critical, rational, calm
252
00:33:50.500 –> 00:34:01.199
Nyk Danu Yoga: observer witnessing consciousness out in the world where it really fucking counts. And we’re not on our yoga mat like when our neighbor maybe has different political beliefs than we do
253
00:34:01.380 –> 00:34:09.519
Nyk Danu Yoga: or you know, somebody has a different lifestyle than you. Somebody eats differently than you.
254
00:34:09.840 –> 00:34:17.459
Nyk Danu Yoga: Right? So can we let go of the dogma around what these poses are called.
255
00:34:18.050 –> 00:34:23.210
Nyk Danu Yoga: And just be curious. So I may say in a Facebook group. And I have.
256
00:34:23.889 –> 00:34:36.690
Nyk Danu Yoga: I’m not familiar with that pose. Can you show me a picture so that I can see what it is that they’re talking about? Because I certainly can’t ask. Answer a question about a pose. If I don’t actually have a good picture in my mind of what pose it is they’re talking about.
257
00:34:37.210 –> 00:34:41.320
Nyk Danu Yoga: and then I might even say, Oh, I know that pose as blank.
258
00:34:42.670 –> 00:34:46.300
Nyk Danu Yoga: that’s it. I’m not attached. Here’s another example.
259
00:34:46.510 –> 00:34:55.519
Nyk Danu Yoga: If you were to sit in front of a bolster that’s laid vertically on the mat, and then you were to lay back on that just the bolster in a yin way.
260
00:34:56.659 –> 00:35:04.330
Nyk Danu Yoga: I always learned that as heart bed, but I have heard some of my Southern neighbor friends, my American friends call it Heart Bench
261
00:35:04.730 –> 00:35:06.440
Nyk Danu Yoga: is one of those wrong.
262
00:35:06.640 –> 00:35:07.760
Nyk Danu Yoga: No.
263
00:35:07.880 –> 00:35:24.810
Nyk Danu Yoga: I’ve even heard it called fish, but to me fish is quite different. Fish would be on blocks, and it’s much more specific and kind of targeted as to where it is, whereas I find heart, bench, or heart bed, whatever name you want to call it, is a little bit more general back in spine, whereas fish
264
00:35:25.240 –> 00:35:27.569
Nyk Danu Yoga: is real specific on blocks.
265
00:35:28.167 –> 00:35:39.300
Nyk Danu Yoga: But again, if someone called that supported fish, would I be all up in their business and be like that is not supported. Fish, that is heart bench, or that is heartbed. No.
266
00:35:39.690 –> 00:35:48.029
Nyk Danu Yoga: I would just say, Oh, I know that pose as blank. Okay, now that I know what pose you’re talking about now? I can answer the question right?
267
00:35:49.610 –> 00:35:56.950
Nyk Danu Yoga: So, dear friends, if you’ve ever wondered, why do Yoga? Why do Yin Yoga poses have all these different names?
268
00:35:57.260 –> 00:36:05.239
Nyk Danu Yoga: Why are they not the same as I learned in my 1st teacher training? Or I see in my Yoga books that are half the based. Now you know the story.
269
00:36:05.450 –> 00:36:10.859
Nyk Danu Yoga: Paul was swimming in the ocean of alignment piranhas
270
00:36:11.460 –> 00:36:21.010
Nyk Danu Yoga: at the time when he was out teaching about skeletal variation and human variation, and you know differences in our bodies.
271
00:36:21.150 –> 00:36:49.940
Nyk Danu Yoga: and so at the time the ocean he was swimming in was full of piranhas of alignment rules, doing things right and wrong, injuring your students, Yada Yada Yada, the right way, the wrong way to do things. And so, rather than kind of swim in that piranha infested water and constantly have to try to defend himself. It just kind of swam over to where the ocean was blue, and there was nobody attacking anybody, and he renamed his poses.
272
00:36:50.770 –> 00:37:04.090
Nyk Danu Yoga: and that is what most of us learned. But again, even within Paul’s student base, you’re going to find differences in names of poses, perfect example. Bernie with his banana, Asana and me calling it crescent pose.
273
00:37:04.460 –> 00:37:06.610
Nyk Danu Yoga: We’re both have the same training.
274
00:37:07.000 –> 00:37:09.040
Nyk Danu Yoga: but we have different names for the pose.
275
00:37:09.290 –> 00:37:12.969
Nyk Danu Yoga: or Bernie calling it straddle, and me calling it what Paul did, which was dragonfly.
276
00:37:14.310 –> 00:37:28.979
Nyk Danu Yoga: or me calling, lying on your back with a bolster under your butt, hugging one knee into your chest, baby dragon, and someone else calling it reclined dragon or Lazy dragon, or Sleeping dragon. Does it matter? Does it really matter?
277
00:37:29.930 –> 00:37:35.609
Nyk Danu Yoga: Would a yin yoga pose by any other name not feel as sweet.
278
00:37:36.610 –> 00:37:38.319
Nyk Danu Yoga: This is my question to you.
279
00:37:38.900 –> 00:37:44.080
Nyk Danu Yoga: so I would argue, yes, a yin yoga pose by any other name is just as sweet.
280
00:37:44.270 –> 00:37:53.100
Nyk Danu Yoga: and that if you find that you’re struggling with that, that’s actually what you need to look at, not what the name of the poses it’s like, why am I so attached to this name?
281
00:37:53.740 –> 00:37:59.070
Nyk Danu Yoga: And why am I feeling so dogmatic about this name? And can I use some critical thinking and some flexibility
282
00:37:59.340 –> 00:38:06.319
Nyk Danu Yoga: when it’s like, I’m not on the yoga mat like, why does it matter what this pose is called? If we know what it does.
283
00:38:06.540 –> 00:38:13.059
Nyk Danu Yoga: how to teach it, how to modify it for different variations and for injuries. Isn’t that what’s important?
284
00:38:13.860 –> 00:38:35.900
Nyk Danu Yoga: Honestly, I would say. Probably at least a quarter of the time. I don’t even say the name of the pose. I just start using my cues to get people into the pose. I might say it part way through or at the end. But honestly, I’m going to cue them. How to get into the pose, and what modifications they could use and what props they could use, and other alternatives for people who it doesn’t work for. I’m going to say all that before the pose name.
285
00:38:36.110 –> 00:38:46.440
Nyk Danu Yoga: It’s really would a yin yoga pose by any other name? Not smell as sweet, because really
286
00:38:47.130 –> 00:38:52.570
Nyk Danu Yoga: wouldn’t a yin yoga pose by any other name still feel just as sweet?
287
00:38:53.260 –> 00:38:54.360
Nyk Danu Yoga: I think so.
288
00:38:55.130 –> 00:39:11.230
Nyk Danu Yoga: Okay, friends, I think that’s enough for this episode. I hope that you got something from this. Remember, when you’re talking to other Yoga professionals or other Yin Yoga students about a pose. And if people are like, I don’t know what that is. Just send them a picture
289
00:39:11.800 –> 00:39:15.550
Nyk Danu Yoga: because they may have learned it differently than you.
290
00:39:15.940 –> 00:39:20.269
Nyk Danu Yoga: To 1 1 person’s banana is another person’s crescent moon pose.
291
00:39:20.660 –> 00:39:23.819
Nyk Danu Yoga: and until we meet again, my friends, bye, for now.
