What to Do When Students Leave Your Yin Yoga Class: Real-Life Tips & Experiences

 

We’ve all been there, teaching our Yin Yoga class, and boom – a student gets up and walks out. It can throw you for a loop, right? But let’s break down why it happens and how to handle it without losing your cool.

Storytime: My First Walkout

I vividly remember the first time a student left my class. I was running a sample Yoga session at a technical college, and this one guy just couldn’t part with his sneakers. No biggie; everyone has their quirks. But when I gently suggested he take them off to feel the ground and he walked out, I was left scratching my head. Turns out, it wasn’t about me or my teaching at all.

Why Students Walk Out

Here’s the deal: students have their reasons. Maybe they’re dealing with something only they know about, or maybe the class doesn’t match up with what they expected.

  1. Self-Care in Action: Students might need to leave to cater to personal needs or mental space.
  2. Mismatch of Expectations: They might not have read the class description right, or they realize mid-pose that it’s not their jam.
  3. Emotional Overload: Sometimes, Yin Yoga stirs up stuff you’re not ready to handle. So stepping out is the safest move.

What’s a Teacher to Do?

If you’re in the hot seat when someone walks out, keep calm and Yin Yoga on.

Here’s what helps me:

  • Don’t Take It Personally: Seriously, it’s rarely about you. Everyone’s on their own journey.
  • Send Them Good Vibes: Mentally send them off with a little love. I like to think, “May you be well.”
  • Refocus on Your Class: There are still folks on their mats who need you, so keep your ground and vibe steady.

Tips for the Future

Sure, walkouts can be surprising, but they’re also a reminder to make sure your class descriptions are on point. Clear descriptions mean fewer surprises (and walkouts!).

Yoga teachers, don’t let the occasional walkout knock your confidence. It happens to everyone. What matters is how you handle it and continue to foster a welcoming space.
