Today, I want to dive into a topic that’s a bit of a paradox in Yoga practice: the discomfort that can come with Yin Yoga and why it’s actually a key to growth. Whether you’re a teacher or a student, understanding this concept is crucial to deepening your practice,

Uncomfortable vs. Discomfort: Words Matter

Let’s kick things off with a slight clarification. You might hear “discomfort” often in Yin circles, but I prefer “uncomfortable.” Why? Because many folks can’t differentiate discomfort from pain, and it’s important not to mix those up. So, when I say “uncomfortable,” we’re talking about something different from pain – something that’s part of growth.

Yin Yoga: Why So Uncomfortable?

In our fast-paced world, where productivity is often celebrated, slowing down can feel…well, uncomfortable. Maybe it’s the stillness that unsettles you or the quiet that allows you to hear thoughts you usually drown out. This is particularly true in a world where constant movement and noise are the norms. Yin Yoga asks you to confront this stillness and quiet, and yes, it might feel awkward at first, but it’s so worth it.

Being Uncomfortable is Part of Growth

Consider this: every time you face a new experience, there’s an element of being uncomfortable whether is relationships or career changes; discomfort is simply the bridge from the present to something greater.

Escaping the Uncomfortable – A Coping Mechanism

Let’s be honest, most of us try to escape the uncomfortable feelings with modern-day distractions: TV, social media, or our ever-present cell phones. Sometimes, we even avoid them by keeping busy. But here’s the thing: if you don’t allow yourself to experience that discomfort, how will you grow?

Yin Yoga and Teaching: The Witness to Discomfort

As teachers, it’s crucial to recognize when your students are uncomfortable, and it’s even more crucial not to rush in and try to make it go away. If you’re always stepping in to alleviate students’ discomfort, you’re stunting their growth. Remember, as a teacher, your role is to guide and normalize the experience, not to fix it.

Embracing the Experience

Next time you notice the urge to rescue your students from discomfort, sit with that feeling. Reflect on what you are feeling and why that feels necessary. On the other side of their discomfort and yours is growth and a deeper, richer Yoga practice.
