Today’s Theme: Home Practice
Today’s topic is starting or rekindling a Yin Yoga practice at home. This was prompted by a question raised during my recent teacher training. Let’s explore why having a self-led home practice is crucial for yin yoga teachers.
The Importance of Home Practice
When I say home practice, I don’t just mean practicing Yoga in your home.
Having a home practice means practicing Yoga independently, without the guidance of a video or a teacher in real time. This practice is entirely self-led. Now, if you’re a student, this might sound tricky, but as a teacher, it’s crucial. Let’s dive into why.
Authentic Teaching
When you regularly engage in self-led practice, the authenticity of your teaching shines through. Your instructions, stories, and tweaks for students become your own instead of echoing someone else’s words. By practicing on your own, you gain personal insights which enrich your teaching style and depth.
Preventing Burnout
Yoga teacher burnout is a reality. Teaching numerous classes can sometimes draw from your personal reserves, leaving you drained. By maintaining a home practice, you ensure you’re taking time for yourself, allowing you to refill your cup.
If you’re advising students to incorporate Yoga into their daily routines, then you practice what you preach.
Overcoming Obstacles to Home Practice
Let’s address the elephant in the room—why do some avoid cultivating a home practice? Several misconceptions deter teachers from starting a self-led Yin Yoga Practice:
- Lack of Time: Often, people think they don’t have enough time. But do they really not have time? Unless you’re juggling multiple jobs and parenting, it’s really about prioritizing your time. Time you currently spend on other things—hello, Netflix!
- Perfect Environment Myth: The misconception that a Yin Yoga practice requires a dedicated space with incense and the perfect music or absolute silence. Reality check: the living room floor works just fine, even with kittens (in my case) or background noise.
- Unrealistic Expectations: Don’t have time for a 90-minute session? Start with what you have, be it 20 minutes or 30 minutes. The key is consistency.
Tips for Starting Your Home Practice
- Commitment is Needed: First, recognize the need for a home practice. This is a non-negotiable if you’re serious about teaching yoga authentically.
- Schedule It: Treat your practice as a daily or weekly meeting—add it to your calendar and set reminders. Consistency is built through routine.
- Find Your Space: It doesn’t have to be a separate Yoga room. Any quiet corner will do. Keep your mat and props within sight to serve as a gentle reminder.
- Reflect and Begin: Before you start, get centered—ask yourself what your body and mind need today. This reflection will guide your practice and make it personalized.
When You Still Want Community
Going to a Yoga class or occasionally for community building or following a video for inspiration is entirely okay for new ideas. But remember, your home practice is about your journey, and it shouldn’t replace being mindful of your body’s unique needs during self-led practice.

So, dear teachers, a gentle reminder to start or rekindle your self-led home practice. It’s where true teaching evolves, where you heal, grow, and eventually pour out to your students from a place of abundance.
