If you’ve been a part of my podcast community, you know that I’m passionate about providing valuable insights into Yin Yoga teaching. The Most Common Mistakes Yin Yoga Teachers Make:
1) Not Being Trained
Teaching from a book or personal practice without formal training in Yin Yoga is a critical mistake. it really is a matter of you don’t know what you don’t know. Also, each educator brings something unique, so pursuing more than one proper Yin training is common.
2) Teaching the Breath Incorrectly
Translating breath techniques from flow classes to Yin Yoga can be counterproductive. Yin requires breaths that downregulate and nurture, unlike the energizing techniques often used in vinyasa.
3) Over-Reliance on Lesson Plans
Flexibility in teaching is key. Rigid adherence to a lesson plan can hinder your ability to respond to the needs of your students.
4) Using Alignment Cues
In Yin Yoga, there’s no “correct” alignment. It’s about finding the shape that works for the student’s unique body structure.
5) Discomfort with Discomfort
Both teachers and students need to embrace discomfort as part of the Yin practice. It’s a natural part of journeying into stillness and quiet.
6) Lack of Variations
Providing multiple variations and propping options is crucial for accommodating different body types and abilities.
7) Insufficient Quiet
Silence is a core component of Yin Yoga. Allow your class to embrace a quiet space instead of filling it with music or continuous talking.
8) Parroting Instructions
Teachers should use their voice or modify learned instructions to create an authentic teaching style that matches their experiences.
9) Hands-On Adjustments
While adjusting props is acceptable, hands-on adjustments are not recommended in Yin Yoga as they can disrupt the practice’s intention of moderate sensation.
10) Inaccessibility of Poses
Ensure poses are accessible to all students. Understanding skeletal variation and offering prop options can help tailor the practice to individual needs.
11) Bonus Mistake—Misunderstanding Yin vs. Restorative Yoga
A common confusion is equating Yin with Restorative Yoga. Props don’t define the style; understanding the goal and energy of each practice does.
